Anne Perry - [Thomas Pitt 14]

The Wall Street Journal recently praised Anne Perry for her "memorable characters and an ability to evoke the Victorian era with the finely wrought detail of a miniaturist." These gifts are much in evidence in this newest novel featuring Ms. Perry's acclaimed detectives, Charlotte and Thomas Pitt. Not since the terrible Whitechapel slayings - the bloody deeds of a madman known as Jack the Ripper - have Londoners felt such terror as that aroused by the gruesome beheadings in Hyde Park. If newly promoted Police Supervisor Thomas Pitt does not quickly apprehend the perpetrator, he is likely to lose his own head, professionally speaking. Clues are few. A headless body slumped in a gently rocking boat on the Serpentine. Another on a bench in a deserted Hyde Park bandstand. That these first victims apparently died without a struggle suggests that they knew, even trusted, the person who killed them. Yet Pitt can find no common thread that might bind a respected naval officer, the first victim, to the distinguished musician who is the second to die. Common folk, gentlemen, the press, politicians, prostitutes, pimps, the powerful secret Inner Circle, all London is howling for blood - Pitt's own if necessary. Never has Pitt been so hard pressed or so curiously reluctant to make an arrest. And just when he needs her most, Pitt's clever wife, Charlotte, seems unable to help him. Nevertheless, Charlotte will do her part as best she can.... In this major novel, Anne Perry attains a new level of psychological acuity and suspense. And in its resolution, Anne Perry's compassionate wisdom and storytelling genius shine forth more brightly than ever before.

The Dancing Druids mb-21

Mrs. Bradley is at her devastating best, saurian perhaps but very human. _____________ Mike O'Hara is a young, handsome distance runner, working with his fellow athletes to catch his cousin, Gerry Gascoyne, in a cross-country game of hare and hounds. Playing a hunch, Mike separates from the group and soon encounters a man who tells him his quarry travelled down a lonely footpath. Instinct tells him otherwise, but Mike follows the path and is soon in unfamiliar territory. As night falls and it begins to rain, Mike stops at a solitary cottage to ask for directions. The woman at the house tells Mike she's with a very sick man who has to be taken to hospital. Mike offers to help, and is soon working with a tall stranger to move the sick man--who is bundled from head to toe in blankets--onto a makeshift stretcher and into a car. Told to hold their bundled passenger upright, Mike grows more and more uneasy of the situation and increasingly alarmed at the deathly stillness of the sick man. Uncertain of what lay ahead, Mike jumps out of the moving car and tumbles out, escaping from the strange scene. O'Hara and Gascoyne decide to tell Mike's story to Ferdinand Lestrange. The lawyer is not available, but much to the boys' luck, Ferdinand's mother is quite interested in Mike's tale. Mrs. Beatrice Adela Lestrange Bradley is on the case, and what criminal activity she uncovers--with the help of Mike and Gerry, secretary Laura Menzies, chauffeur George, nephew Denis Bradley, and a troupe of hired film extras--centers around a circle of nine prehistoric stones called the Dancing Druids.

A Thousand Days

As special assistant to the president, Arthur Schlesinger witnessed firsthand the politics and personalities that influenced the now legendary Kennedy administration. Schlesinger's close relationship with JFK, as a politician and as a friend, has resulted in this authoritative yet intimate account in which the president "walks through the pages, from first to last, alert, alive, amused and amusing" (John Kenneth Galbraith). A THOUSAND DAYS is "at once a masterly literary achievement and a work of major historical significance" (New York Times).
