Uncommon Vows

Lady Meriel de Vere had deceived Adrian, Earl of Shropshire. Standing in the royal forest, her falcon perched on her arm, she boldly claimed to be a Welsh commoner, not a noble Norman. Lord Adrian beheld in wonder her raven-black hair and defiant blue eyes, heard her lies, and felt a dark, primeval passion rob him of all reason. In one irrevocable move of fate, he ordered this fair beauty locked in his castle’s tower, vowing to entice her into surrendering her kisses with lips as hungry as his own. Never to give in, to die if she must, was Meriel’s vow ... until one rash moment of impetuousness swept them both up in the royal battles of kings ... and into a dangerous intrigue of sweet caresses ... and fiery, all-consuming love.

Alternate Wars

What would have happened if history had been different: if the major events that shaped our times had occurred in a different way-or not at all? From a Trojan War in which Helen surrenders to a Civil War fought with robots, from a World War I in which Teddy Roosevelt tries to recapture the glory of San Juan Hill to a World War II in which the race is not for atomic weapons but for orbital rockets, these bold excursions in time depict bizarre new worlds-oddly familiar, disturbingly different. "And Wild for to Hold" (Nancy Kress) "Tundra Moss" (F. M. Busby) "When Free Men Shall Stand" (Poul Anderson) "Arms and the Woman" (James Morrow) "Ready for the Fatherland" (Harry Turtledove) "The Tomb" (Jack McDevitt) "Turpentine" (Barry N. Malzberg) "Goddard's People" (Allen Steele) "Manassas, Again" (Gregory Benford) "The Number of the Sand" (George Zebrowski) "If Lee Had Not Won the Battle of Gettysburg" (Winston S. Boy's Life

In me are the memories of a boy's life, spent in that realm of enchantments. These are the things I want to tell you.... Robert McCammon delivers "a tour de force of storytelling" (BookPage) in his award-winning masterpiece, a novel of Southern boyhood, growing up in the 1960s, that reaches far beyond that evocative landscape to touch readers universally. As Cory struggles to understand his father's pain, his eyes are slowly opened to the forces of good and evil that surround him. The Wind Dancer

Legend held that whoever possessed it would rule the destinies of nations. Renaissance Italy, where intrigues were as intricate as carved cathedral doors and affairs of state were ruled by affairs of the bedchamber ... where the rustling richness of silk hid the quick glint of deadly stilettos, and poison vied with port as the favored drink to offer guests.... From the spellbinding pen of Iris Johansen comes her most lush, dramatic, and emotionally touching romance yet--the captivating story of the lovely and indomitable slave Sanchia and the man who bought her on a back street in Florence.... Passionate, powerful condottiere Lionello Andreas would love Sanchia and endanger her with equal wild abandon as he sought to win back the prize possession of his family--the Wind Dancer.

A Time of Exile

The world of Deverry: an intricate tapestry of fate, past lives, and unfathomable magic. With A Time Of Exile, Katharine Kerr opens new territory in The Deverry Saga, exploring the history of the Elcyion Lacar, the elves who inhabit the country west of Deverry. It is years since the half-elven Lord Rhodry took the throne of Aberwyn. When Rhodry's lost lover, Jill-now a powerful wizard-comes to Aberyn and tells him it's time he accepted his elven heritage, Rhodry faces the most difficult choice of his life. But with Jill's help and that of a human wizard named Aderyn who has lived for years in the westlands, Rhodry begins to understand how his life is connected not just to his own people, but to the Elcyion Lacar as well. At last, destiny begins to unravel its secrets, revealing Aderyn's true purpose among the elves-and the god' deeper design behind Rhodry's dual heritage. From the Paperback edition. From Library JournalRhodry, the half-elfin Lord of Aberwyn, gives up his throne in order to come to terms with his nonhuman heritage and, in so doing, fulfills part of the destiny that has haunted him through many lifetimes. Kerr's latest novel, set in her fantasy world of Deverry, weaves together two distinct stories of love and magic in a richly detailed, intricately plotted tale. Highly recommended.Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Kirkus ReviewsFrom a tangled tale of magic, reincarnation, predestination, and vengeance (Daggerspell), Kerr's saga has mutated into fairly straightforward Celtic fantasy (cf. Katherine Kurtz), with the reincarnation aspect used as a springboard to tell stories of earlier epochs. Here, Lord Rhodry of Aberwyn is half-elfin and so ages very slowly; gradually his people begin to mutter, and his own son Cullyn grows impatient to rule in his own right. So when old flame Jill, former mercenary Silver Dagger, now a master of dweomer (magic), comes calling, Rhodry decides to fake his own death and go west to the elfin land of the Elcyion Lacar in search of his roots. Eventually, the wizard Aderyn, whom Rhodry knew in a previous incarnation, eventually must save Rhodry from the present-day consequences of that past association. Standard, undemanding fare for series fans. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
