Seattle printing collective owner Pam Nilsen is on the case when a member of the group turns up dead before a controversial mergerPam Nilsen and her twin sister, Penny, inherited Best Printing four years ago when their parents died in a car crash. Unwilling to sell their family legacy, the sisters turned it into a collective run by a cadre of activists whose arguments over the business can be just as impassioned as their support for progressive causes. But internal divisions at the collective pale in comparison to those between Seattle typesetters B. Violet and Moby Dick—once a single company that has since broken apart into an all-female (and lesbian-run) company, and an all-male (and quickly bankrupt) operation.Shortly after Best Printing and B. Violet begin discussing a merger, the offices of the typesetter are ransacked, one of their members nowhere to be found. Then an employee of Best Printing is found murdered. It appears as if someone will stop at nothing—not even murder—to prevent the merger. And it’s up to Pam to get to the bottom of this deadly turn of events before the killer strikes again.Murder in the Collective is the first book in the Pam Nilsen Mystery trilogy, which continues with Sisters of the Road and The Dog Collar Murders.*Review“The narrative is engrossing, evenly paced, and refreshingly unique.” —Booklist“The action never lets up, the writing is taut and smart, and every time a cute, pat solution for a situation arises, Wilson steers clear.” —Voice Literary Supplement“A strong, witty and very well-written book.” —Time Out London“A radical stab in the back for that tired old genre, the whodunit. We all did it, that’s the point of a collective.” —The ListenerProduct DetailsFile Size: 1049 KBPrint Length: 226 pagesPublisher: Open Road Media (November 12, 2013)Sold by: Amazon Digital Services, Inc. September 13, 2000By A CustomerFormat:PaperbackI found this mystery on the sale shelf of a local bookstore. Even though the book was written over a decade ago it isn't dated. I enjoyed Barbara Wilson's characters and her infusion of geopolitics. Nothing felt contrived or cliche, which of course is rare for mysteries. I especially liked her sleuth Pam Nilson. The characters, dialogue and the plot all seemed logical. My only minor complaint would be with the climax, which seemed a bit of a letdown, but otherwise I can recommend this msytery.I look forward to reading other books in this series and also her other mystery series. Gallions Reach is the story of an East End shipping clerk, Jim Colet, who, in a moment of rebellion against the tyranny of dull work and a bullying employer, causes his boss's death with an unlucky blow. He escapes to sea, without any clear intention of doing so, and becomes purser on the Altair, a steamer making her way across the Indian Ocean. The Altair goes down in a tropical storm; the crew are rescued by a liner, and Colet meets a prospector who takes him on an expedition into the depths of the Malay jungle. H. M. Tomlinson subtitled his novel 'A romance', and it is in a sense a romantic version of his own life; but what makes it a classic is his marvellous power of description, and his extraordinary command of what J. B. Priestley called 'a magnificent and idiomatic prose style, as individual as a voice.Tomlinson is one of the very small company of writers who have created classics out of their travels.Gallions Reach was first published in 1927. FOUR SCORE AND SEVEN YEARS FROM NOW… In the 21st century, Planet Earth was in the grip of an orientalized, paternalistic World State that gave all—and took all. Only in the land that was once the United States were the principles of freedom paid so much as lip service, and even there liberty flickered toward extinction. In such a world as this the Jeffersonians were a band of hopeless visionaries, political cranks, a quixotic underground dreaming of the reinstitution of the American Constitution. But then a star drive was developed and the Jeffersonians were sentenced to eternal exile. On a world twenty light years and a century from their homes they set out to create a society conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that the individual is more important than the state. They are the New Americans. This is their story. SPECIAL BONUS: The Hugo and Nebula Winning THE QUEEN OF AIR AND DARKNESS, and HOME. * * * The benevolent, paternalistic World State regarded the freedom-minded Jeffersonians as a minor embarrassment whose violent elimination would cause more disruption than their demise would merit. So both sides were happy when the chance came for voluntary exile to a distant planet. But two hundred years later the less benevolent descendant of the World State that had let them go was to decide that the cosmos was not big enough to hold both it and a free people… [Best viewed with CoolReader.] Views: 65
Following a motorway accident in which both his wife and daughter are killed, Jack Vail, now alone in the world, finds himself in London—though it is not quite the city as we know it.While his home in the North of England was stricken with poverty and radiation poisoning, the capital is characterized by consumerism, media-obsession and moral corruption. Basic manufacturing no longer exists, but pornography, show business and money-marketing flourish.Vail is immediately drawn into this sinister world, yet throughout the novel he attempts to maintain a belief in a larger order of things. In such a society, however, it seems impossible to defy the chaos, and it isn't long before Vail is engulfed by the ever-developing anarchy surrounding him.Through his nightmarish vision of the country in a not-too-distant future, award-winning author Trevor Hoyle vividly reflects the grim mood of 1980s Britain, the period in which this cult novel was originally published. Review"With each book, it seems, Mr. Wambaugh's skill as a writer increases . . . . In Lines And Shadows he gives an off-trail, action-packed true account of police work and the intimate lives of policemen that, for my money, is his best book yet."--The New York Times Book Review. One of his best books, comparable to The Onion Field for storytelling and revelatory power."--Chicago Sun-TimesFrom the PublisherNot since Joseph Wambaugh's best-selling The Onion Field has there been a true police story as fascinating, as totally gripping as . . .Lines And Shadows. The media hailed them as heroes. Others denounced them as lawless renegades. A squad of tough cops called the Border Crime Task Force. A commando team sent to patrol the snake-infested no-man's-land south of San Diego. Not to apprehend the thousands of illegal aliens slipping into the U.S., but to stop the ruthless bandits who preyed on them nightly--relentlessly robbing, raping and murdering defenseless men, women and children. The task force plan was simple. They would disguise themselves as illegal aliens. They would confront the murderous shadows of the night. Yet each time they walked into the violent blackness along the border, they came closer to another boundary line--a fragile line within each man. and crossing it meant destroying their sanity and their lives.
