  PROLOGUE

  THE LAST WHITE WOLF

"Sera, quick! Go now! They’re coming."

My husband’s dying words echo through my mind as I clutch my newborn daughter in my arms. The woods are quiet, the only sound the squelching of my feet in the blood that covers the forest floor as I take slow, measured steps away from what was once my home.

Now this land is tainted, soaked in blood, both of our enemies and of our loved ones. Even as I walk away from it, towards the place where I know the veil to be, tears fall at the knowledge of all that’s been lost here today.

All because of this precious baby I hold to my chest. She’s sleeping peacefully, completely unaware of the change she has wrought upon us all.

No one could have imagined the power she would possess. Or that her very birth would set off a chain of events so significant that they might very well lead to the destruction of us all.

Her father, my husband Benjamin, suspected she might be powerful, but never did we think that that her power would be felt by others. Or that it would show itself upon her entrance into this world.

Which is why I must do this.

I’ve realized the hard way that my sweet baby isn’t safe among our kind, and maybe she never will be. The last act my husband did was to put a magic ward over her, one that will only break when the Academy calls her back home.

Unfortunately, as much as I wish that wouldn’t happen, there is no power on this earth that can stop the Academy from calling my daughter to what is and always will be her birthright.

The White Wolf line has always been connected to the halls of that school by things even I’m not fully aware of. All my husband used to say was that when he was called, the walls told him all he needed. When the time comes, they will tell my daughter everything too. Guide her into greatness since we cannot.

With a shaky breath, I trudge on through the forest, ignoring the bodies of fallen family members I see along the way. There is nothing I can do for them now.

I must be strong like my husband and do what the White Wolf legacy showed me must be done. I have to send my child away, far away where she will never be found. She must grow up without the influences of our kind and in a place that no one will ever think to look for her. I know of only one such place.

  The Penitentiary.

At least I know despite the rest of its inhabitants, there is someone I can trust to look after my child. She may be human, but so is everyone else.

No one will suspect the truth of my daughter until she comes of age and the Academy sends for her.

A few minutes of walking, I sense the veil a moment before I see it. It’s a beautiful iridescent wall that shimmers in the light of the new moon. Not many people are blessed to see such a thing. Only those who have the White Wolf genetics are capable of it. The only reason I can see it now is that my daughter’s blood still runs through my body from her birth. The nurse nicked her while she was still in my womb and our blood mingled. Which is also how I was given the vision on what to do with my baby when the fighting begun.

I hesitate before stepping through. The idea of doing this churns my stomach. If only there was another way.

I could run, take my child with me and do my best to protect her. But the hunters would never stop searching for her. If they managed to and got rid of me in the process, then they would be free to raise her and use her for their own means.

No, this is my only option. To protect her, to give her a fighting chance, this is what must be done.

With a deep breath, I start to push through the veil, holding tight to my daughter.

Between her blood and the remnants of my husband’s power, it should give me access to cross the veil and return before the hunters are aware of what I’ve done.

Any other being would need to travel to the specific gates required to cross the dimensions, but the people of the White Wolf line can travel at any point they wish.

The cold washes over me as I push through. Still, my daughter doesn't stir from her sleep.

Yet another tear falls as I make my way across, mournful at the thought she will never know me. Or her father. Or any of the people who loved her and died to keep her safe.

Even now, I don't know if any of my or Benjamin's family survived the attack. She very may well be the last of both of our lines.

The moment I break through the veil on the other side, I can’t hold back the gasp of shock as my body struggles to adjust to this new world.

Once I’ve regained my equilibrium, I glance around trying to figure out where exactly I am. There are a few towns on this side of the veil, each of them seperated by thick acres of woods so as to give them distance between those serving light sentences for small crimes, and others who are here for more serious natures.

I had focused on Leira when I was crossing, the same village I knew my maid was forced to remain out her time. She’s serving an unjust sentence, one I wished I had the power to overrule when the judges had sentenced her, but now, I’m glad she’s here.

I breathe in deep, trying to catch the scents of humans. When I get the faint tickle in my nose, I begin walking through the woods in that direction hoping Mila got my message.

My gaze darts around frantically the closer to Leira I get. If anyone other than Mila sees me, it could cause a lot of trouble. The whole point is for no one to know I was here and that I’d left my child behind.

Up ahead I can see through the trees and I know I’m where I meant to be. Leira is the only town that has buildings at the edge of the woods. They’re supposed to be for when villagers start to act worse than when they came in. The houses are a type of transition home. If they get their shit together, they can stay in Leira. If not, they are required to leave and live in another town.

Even though it’s dark, I can’t risk edging closer for fear someone will see me. Many of the people in here would recognize me for who I am.

A twig snaps behind me, and I turn, crouched in a defensive stance holding my baby tighter in case I need to fight. A shadow steps out from behind a tree a few feet away.
