As it was, they lived in a nice suburb in an area of the town with several other alien families – known as ‘Space City’. It was a good place for Max to grow up in – more diverse than any other place on Earth.
Xarq now worked for the Defense Department of the Agency and Alyssa had returned to her job at the Immigration Office. While her first space mission had been a fluke, living with an alien she now definitely understood more about them and their problems on Earth. She had even gotten a promotion at the Office! Although of course for now, she was on maternity leave for… the unforeseeable future.
Several authorities, both on Earth and beyond it, had become curious about Max and how a sterile hybrid like Xarq could have a child. But due to the recent events, no one had pursued them on the matter beyond regular pregnancy check-ups, and Alyssa was glad about that.
She knew further tests would spread more light on their situation and she was aware that Earth scientists would never handle her like the Krezlians had, but she just wasn’t ready for that. The current speculation was that something in her had awakened Xarq’s dormant genes and made him able to reproduce.
And that was enough for them now. Once she had given birth to a healthy baby boy, she hadn’t even cared how he came about – just that he was there. She was so happy. Happy to have a family of her own, and no one could take that away from her.
Although if she had known eight months ago that she would be kidnapped on her very first Agency mission, mate with an alien, and have his child, she would’ve told them they must be joking.
But it was no joke. It was her life, and she was happier than she had ever been. Even with baby Max wailing loudly in her arms.
Trying to soothe him, she rocked him in her arms, but her impatience was growing. She was almost ready to simply call Xarq back just as he appeared around a corner – with a petite sales assistant hurrying by his side.
Alyssa’s eyebrows rose in surprise, because the woman seemed completely unfazed by the fact that an alien man had just pulled her from wherever she had been for help.
“I am so sorry,” the woman apologized to her as they reached them. “I was in the back looking for something in storage. Is there anything I can do for you?” She smiled, her kind eyes shifting from her to baby Max, who suddenly seemed to have calmed down now that his father was near again.
Alyssa blinked, surprised by the woman’s casual reaction, especially just as she had been thinking the worst. But her surprise quickly turned into a smile, which she shared with the clerk.
“Actually, you can help,” she said, nodding toward the crib.
It didn’t take long for them to complete the purchase, and moments later, they walked out of the store with a perfect baby crib for little Max and a new hope for the future. The positive encounter with the sales assistant had lifted her mood, making her think that perhaps someday, all humans would be as accepting.
Because alien or human, people were people, and Alyssa was happy for the family she had. Happy that Xarq had entered her life, because she couldn’t imagine her life without him anymore.
Yeah, he was an alien. But she didn’t care, because he was her alien and she was his.
And that’s all that mattered.
