  The Right People

  Chapter 1

This is a very important story, and it needs to be told very carefully, so you must sit still and listen very carefully please, as I would like to tell it correctly – oh and turn off the tv if you are watching it!.

Are you sitting comfortably then I’ll begin…..

In 1971, an exciting thing happened In a town called Robinsville there was a man and a lady, they were very rich, and they had fifteen cars and 200 jewellery boxes and 5000 record players between them.

Robinsville is a town that has many forests, hills and lakes, and it has a beautiful department store called Jeffery and Jackson.

The man and the lady had a garden that was full of beautiful flowers, and they had a shed and a swimming pool and a tennis court.

Greta was the ladies name, and her boyfriend (the man) was called Sebastian.

Greta was a beautiful lady, who wore lovely long flowery maxi dresses and spoke in a soft voice. She loved to sit at home and sew and play the violin. She also had lots of cats, and she liked to make gingerbread men, but she did not have any children to share them with, she always gazed at the empty chairs at the kitchen table. It was her husband Sebastian ate all the gingerbread when he came home from work. Isn’t that sad?

Greta spent lots of time in the garden pruning her fruit trees, and she wore bright pink gardening gloves with gold flowers on that were from Harrods.

Sebastian was an artist, he painted cats for childrens books and adverts that went in the newspaper, in those days, there were still lots of pictures rather than the computerised photos that we see today. He had to work very hard and send his pictures by post to lots of different publishers, in big parcels. Everything was very old fashioned.

Greta and Sebastian had fifteen horses, forty cats and fifteen goldfish, they visited the vet regularly and spent a fortune in Tescos on pet food.

  Chapter 2

Greta and Sebastian had a house in Disneyland, it had a Mickey Mouse doll on every bed upstairs, and when they stayed there they always had pancakes for breakfast.

They also had a house next door to the Queen, where they regularly held huge parties, and everyone came dressed in their best party clothes.

Unfortunately they did not have any children, this was due to a problem with their bodies which scientists and doctors could not understand.

Their only hope was to adopt some children.

This was quite a rare idea at this time, and as it was 1972, there were not many children to adopt, everybody was bored and stood in the garden playing “swingball” because Iphones had not been invited, and they had just had to put up with something called “The Miners Strike” which meant that day after day there was no electricity so no TV!, so everyone read books or had candle lit dinner parties. Imagine that!!!

  Chapter 3

In order to adopt a child, Greta and Sebastian had to visit a special man in an office, and he wrote down lots of information about Greta and Sebastian on lots of pieces of paper, as this was in the days before computers, and people used things called “typewriters” and did “carbon copies” instead of photocopying. How Silly!.

Anyway, one day the special man in an office phoned them and said that they had to come in and answer some questions that would help them adopt a child.

The special mans’ office was very big and had lots of old fashioned furniture a bit like you would imagine finding in a school for wizards or witches, it looked a bit scary really. Greta and Sebastian sat in some big leather chairs that are called “Parker Knoll”.

The special man said “I am now going to ask you fifteen questions”. Greta and Sebastian looked at each other in surprise. The important man started to read from a list.

  2.What is your favourite colour?.

  3.

  4.What is your favourite pet

  5.What is your worst nightmare

  6.What scares you?

  7.Who is your favourite filmstar?

  8.What is your favourite flower?

9.What do you like to do in your spare time?

10.Do you like Coca Cola or apple juice?

11.Would you help somebody who fell over in the street, or would you just walk away?

12.Do you think kinder egg toys are hard to put together?

13.Do you like Zinnia (a rather well made up doll, that always wore pink, and had a white handbag) or Caroline (she was the doll before Barbie, and was a doll that came with her own school books, and had a sensible look on her face)

  14.Do you play tennis?

15.Would you rather fight a dragon or a three headed monster?

16.Would you rather have an ice cream or a bourbon biscuit?

  17.Are you happy?

The Right People By Gretchen Romanov

Greta and Sebastian finished reading the list, they didn’t realise that there were actually sixteen questions and the man had got it wrong, but men like the very special man have lots to do, and sometimes make grammar mistakes as they are in too much of a rush.

When they had finished answering the questions, the important man said “You will be hearing from me in the next few months about how far you are up the waiting list, but I am afraid it will take about two years for you to come to the top of the list to have a child”.

Greta and Sebastian sighed, it was sad that they had to go through this long process. They were not sure that they could wait that long, they would have to find lots of long things to do to keep them occupied.

On the way home in the car Sebastian came up with a list of things they could do to pass the time.

18.Go to Paris for a month – they could see the Eiffel Tower every week for four weeks! And buy lots of smart clothes!

19.Completely redecorate the house – they could paint it in lots of different colours and have a big mural of a circus in the lounge – the new baby would like that!!

3.Chop back all the fruit trees in the garden, then they could make jam and sell it in Jeffery and Jackson in the delicatessen department with all the lovely sausages and cakes that they sell in there.

4.Start a riding school for children. They never really did much with their horses and they were starting to get a bit lazy. This would be a way of getting them some exercise, and the children would love it!

Their first project was touring Paris, they got on the train to france and had four suitcases, and they took one of their cleaning ladies with them, to remind them to bring their passports and to keep Greta company while Sebastian looked in CD shops, and Sebastian company while Greta looked in clothes shops.

They went up the Eiffel Tower in a lift, and looked through a telescope to see the whole of paris, it looked very beautiful as it was just getting dark and they could see all the lights of the city.

Sebastian put his arm round Greta and gave her a big smile, Greta smiled back. She had beautiful big blue eyes.

  Chapter 2

Some months passed, Greta passed the time by making a huge patchwork blanket to play with the baby on. She cut lots of material into squares that were the same square shape measurement.

She used flowery material, tartan material, material from an old wedding dress, and material that she bought from charity shops.

She sewed all the squares together and the blanket looked very beautiful. She was proud of her wonderful blanket.

She decided to make another one, and In the middle of this one she cut out a big tree from some green material, and then cut out some red circles to make apples and so blue material to make some pale blue birds that she cut out of an old light blue sheet to put on the tree.

(taken from the baby gift gallery – a powell and craft blanket)

On the list of things to do while waiting for the baby was decorating the house, Sebastian and Greta had had lots of fun stripping all the wallpaper off the lounge, but they could not decide which colour to paint it.

Greta wanted red, and Sebastian wanted light brown. In the end they decided to have one wall light brown, one wall red, one wall white, and one wall black. It all looked very lovely, then they bought some leather sofas to go in there, and a big mirror for the wall. They also bought a huge tv, so that they could watch lots of old films together.

However, they still felt sad because they were still waiting to hear whether they were going to be able to adopt a baby.

One sunny day, Greta looked out of the window, she had planted three sunflowers in the front garden and they were all competing with each other to see how tall they could grow. She had called them Sarah, Jenny and Mary. Mary was

the tallest, and she looked beautiful, Jenny and Mary were quite small.

Greta had planted some clematis on the garden fence, and now it had some green leaves and pink flowers and virtually covered the whole of the fence. The butterflies and bees buzzed around it.

The postman came up the drive in his van, he rang the doorbell, Greta saw him drive up, when she was looking out of the window. She ran to the door and grabbed the post out of his hand – as she did every morning to see if her baby had come yet.

  Chapter 3

Greta called Sebastian and they both opened the letter, inside it said

  Dear Greta and Sebastian,

We are pleased to tell you that you are the right people to adopt a baby.

We have found a baby for you, she has curly blonde hair and blue eyes and her name is Betilda. We would like you to come and pick her up next Tuesday at 2.00pm.

  Yours Sincerely

  John Smith

  (The Important Man)

Greta and Sebastian were very excited, they hugged each other and phoned all their friends and family to tell them the news.

They quickly set about decorating the babies room, and Greta hung her big quilt on the wall. They had bought a huge white cot for the baby, and some teddies that were big and small.

The baby had it’s own big white wardrobe, full of lovely baby clothes in creams and browns because they did not know if they were getting a boy or a girl.

Now they knew that they were having a girl called “Betilda”, Sebastian painted her name in bright pink with a background of yellow sunflowers on a big piece of canvas and hung it up in her room.

Greta picked the sunflowers out of the garden, she was so happy that she danced around the trees.

She put the sunflowers in a big white vase in Betildas room.

Soon it was “Next Tuesday” when it was time for Sebastian and Greta to get their baby.

Sebastian and Greta got up very early because they were very excited, it felt like Christmas, but you could not see the wrapping paper!.

They went to a special office in town, it was a big old stone building with a clock in the hall and a big black door.

They knocked on the door, and a man in a suit answered.

  “Come in” he said.

He showed them into a big white room with pink flowery curtains and leather sofas, and lots of photos of children on the walls.

A lady came in carrying a baby.

“This is Betilda” she said, and handed them the baby.

Sebastian and Greta were so excited, it was the best day of their lives. They could hardly speak.

They counted Betilda’s fingers and thumbs, she had ten!!.

They looked into Betildas’ eyes, they were blue!.

When they held her, she was as light as a bag of sugar.

They thanked the man, then took Betilda to the car in her new car seat and drove home.

When they got home, they showed Betilda the sunflowers, and her room with the lovely patchwork quilt.

After that, they all lived happily ever after.
