When I wake up on the third day of school I’ve already had enough of my senior year. It’s the same shit every day and today’s not the day I’m going to come home a winner, so when I pack up my bag and tell my parents bye, I drive around town until I know my sister and her boyfriend are gone before breaking into their house.

It’s not really breaking and entering since I know where the key is, but they don’t know I’m here and they probably wouldn’t be too happy if they found out, but what they don’t know won’t kill them, right? I manage to zone out for the next few hours, learning everything I can about how this serial killer worked, until my phone buzzes.

KATE: Bitch, where the hell were you today?

LEENA: On the couch watching Netflix. ; )

KATE: LOL! Well hot guy was in gym today and didn’t dress again! Mr. Farlane sent him to the office but your uncle grabbed him and screamed at him in his office for a bit. It was cute.

LEENA: No more talk of my uncle and the word cute in the same sentence.

KATE: ….I think the new guy was looking for you.

  LEENA: Bye Kate!

I toss my phone on the table and head for the fridge to grab a beer. It’s after four so it’s fine, and Fenton keeps this fridge stocked now that he can. He’ll never notice one missing.

God, this would be the life. Beer. Netflix. And no one to answer to.

Three days later I’m starting my senior year of high school. I shouldn’t be in high school anymore but there were a couple of subjects in lock up that couldn’t hold my interest so I’m behind on credits.

Paige runs back into the house for something else. I don’t care if I’m late, but with the way she’s running around I think she cares. She’s the one who insisted on driving me, I couldn’t walk. Now I wait.

When she gets back in, I take a minute to appreciate those legs. Damn she’s got fine legs.

“Breakfast?” I nod to the coffee in her hand.

“Every day,” she says, then smiles over at me. “You ready for your first day at Westwind?”

“Let’s put it this way. If the state didn’t threaten to transfer me to prison, I wouldn’t be going back to school. So to answer your question?” I drawl and gesture to her, encouraging her to fill in her own blank.

She takes a deep breath and lets it out in a huff. With one hand on her coffee cup and another on the wheel, she darts her eyes to me then back to the road.

“You’re going to love it here,” she says quietly. “Some of the best days of my teenage years were inside this building.”

“Some of the best days of my brother’s teenage years were inside you.” I look out the side window, gripping my backpack with aversion. Fucking high school.

“So! Fenton said Coach Matthews has been pushing to get you on the football team?”

  “Why?” I snicker.

“Because you used to play. Back before you went to-” She stops talking suddenly and throws me a fake smile. “He said you used to play. It’ll be good getting back into things you like doing.”

I chuckle. “Used to. Unless it involves girls,” my eyes dart down to her legs, “with legs as nice as yours, I’m not interested.” I look out the side window again.

She tries to pull her shorts down lower and clears her throat nervously. “So what do you like to do now, then?”

“Girls. With legs as nice as yours,” I answer simply. She set herself up for that one.

“Okay!” she chirps and tries to steer the conversation into safe territory. “So, what’s your schedule like this year?”

The girl’s been trying for three days to talk me into being happy that I’m living on a damn farm and going back to high school but she’s not going to get through.

I huff and cut her some slack, pulling out my schedule. “Shit, shit, more shit. Aaaand, shit,” I read to her then hand it over.

“You’re in Algebra with my little brother,” she says, reading it as she drives and still gripping her coffee cup. Last I remember Paige didn’t drive because she sucked at it. Some things never change. “And PE with my sist...er...” She looks over at me and hands me back the schedule. “Cool.”

“Yeah cool.” I roll my eyes. “I'm sure all the Kenshaws are happy I’m back. We’ll be best friends.” I slide down in my seat some when I see the school come into view. Instant fucking day ruiner.

“Well I know I am.” That’s a damn lie and the fake smile on her face shows it. She parks in front of the school and looks up at the building then over at me. “I can drive you until you get your license if you’d like.”

“Sure, whatever.” I open the door and get out, leaning back down. “Can you take me to get my license Friday? Get me out of school early and I’ll take the test. Thanks.” I tap the roof of the car and walk away before she can tell me no.

This might be more of a hell than juvie was. I ran that center...sort of. Get a few guards on your side and things will be smooth. So I did that and they did things for me. Like let me sneak over to the girls center every now and then.

As I walk these halls, people keep looking at me like I’m carrying dynamite. I don’t wear cowboy boots or spurs. No natural sun faded jeans. My Stetson’s not tucked away in my locker. I don’t belong in this school and it shows. But by second hour, I have a few fans; mainly girls, but I’ll take it. I need to find some ass.

The second I walk into my third hour, Algebra, I see the Kenshaw. There’s no mistaking him. He looks like his brother did but a little younger. We make eye contact and I give a head nod. I don’t need their forgiveness, but I also don’t want problems with Paige’s family. It takes twenty minutes until I realize the kid doesn’t know who I am. I wish it’d stay that way, but sooner or later we’ll be reintroduced. I met him when he was younger, but I was younger too and didn’t look anything like I do now.

With my backpack over my shoulder I head to gym. I bypass the locker room and go sit on the bleachers. I’m not participating. I’ve fucking participated in every sport and physical activity known to man while at that fucking detention center. The only sport that interests me is football and this class won’t be anything like football. Every kid is dressed and ready to play hopscotch or some shit and a few of the guys seem to have a problem with me sitting out. I can fix that for them. Anyone that has a problem with me will have an even bigger problem.

“Hey, Sutton.” A giggling girl waves her fingers at me and her friends croon at her side.

“Hey.” I nod and look them over. I think I’ll go for her first. She’s cute, not my type, but she’s cute.

While I figure out my plan of action to get in this girl’s pants, my sight lands on two girls walking out of the locker room almost five minutes late. This is my type. She’s fucking hot. Gorgeous even. Jesus, I didn’t think this school was capable of having a student that looks like her. Platinum blonde, head shaved on one side, red cherry lips, black eye makeup around her gorgeous blue eyes. She’s dressed like the other girls except she gave it her personal twist. Those shorts are rolled up enough her ass cheeks are hanging out and it’s a fine ass. She’s got nice legs and I can’t stop thinking about licking her from her feet to her clit. Her shirt’s rolled and tied up and I want to suck marks onto her stomach before sucking her tits. This is the girl I want to fuck first in this school. I gotta have her.

"Mr. Sterling?” the teacher says with annoyance and I look at him. I was so busy drooling over the hot girl, I wasn’t paying attention. “I said is there a reason you’re not dressed?”

“Gym’s dumb?” I shrug and few people chuckle.

“If you don’t come dressed tomorrow, you’ll find yourself in weekend detention.”

I roll my eyes before putting them back on the hot girl. She stares at me a minute but turns her back, so I focus on her ass and those legs. I lose focus when they start hopping around like fucking frogs. Idiots. So I focus on my phone my brother bought me, until a football comes flying at my face. I catch it with one hand right before I get b
eaned in the face. When I look up, the hot girl and her friends are laughing at me, but they didn’t throw it. The guy behind them did and he’s not a student or I’d wipe the floor with him.

“Sterling, I want to talk to you in my office.” The tattooed asshole says and I don’t know how he knows my name, but then again, my fucking brother was one of the popular kids in this school three years ago and he’s probably to blame. “Leena, pull your shorts out of your ass,” he snaps at the hot girl and I cock my head.

Leena Kenshaw? No fucking way. I stare at her tits, then legs, and it clicks. I fucked her. We were fifteen and we fucked in her daddy’s barn. Multiple times. Day fucking made. Leena Kenshaw got hot as hell.

“My shorts aren’t in my ass,” she blurts, flipping him off and grinning.

He sighs with a head shake. “Kids are the devil,” he mutters as he walks away. “Sterling!” he screams before walking into an office off the gym.

I get to my feet and make sure to walk directly across the gym floor so I can walk past little Leena Kenshaw. I took her virginity.

I smirk and wink at her as I walk past.

“Fuck you lookin’ at?” She glares at me, crossing her arms under her tits. Doesn’t look like she recognizes me, but I can change that.

I look back, my eyes go right for that ass. She didn’t look like this back then. I remember she was cute. I actually really liked the girl. A lot. But I had shit to handle to save my brother’s stupid ass. But now I’m back and I can’t fucking wait to have her bent over her daddy’s workbench again.

“Trying to figure out if I’ll eat you with your clothes on, or off.” I keep walking toward that office and hear a couple people gasp.

“Keep dreaming, asshole,” she yells and flips me off with the same grace she used with the other dude.

Unable to shake her from my head I let this asshole drone on and on about football.

“I think you’ll be an asset to our team. Just like your brother was,” he finishes.

“Not interested.” I stand and grab my backpack but he gets to his feet.

“It’s not a fucking request. Either you're on the team or you're going to the state penitentiary.”

I furrow my brows and plop back down, looking at this dickweed. “How the fuck you gonna do that, asshole? You some kind of sick fuck that gets a boner off teenagers playing football or some shit that you’re gonna blackmail me unless I let you see me in a football uniform?”

“No, you little shit. I’m Grant Matthews. Coach Matthews to you and close to the Kenshaws and your brother. Your brother asked me to help you out, and seeing as how you fucking broke out of juvie five days before your release, you’re in a lot of shit right now. So not only am I your football coach, I'm your life mentor.”

My face goes blank. They assigned me a sponsor. The grin on his face tells me he enjoys this a little too much. I was told I could avoid having to check in with someone like that...and this fucking guy doesn’t even work for the state. What the fuck.

“You’ll be starting football practice and when football’s over, you’ll be my assistant while I organize next year’s team. Check in’s are Thursdays and Mondays and you’ll give urine samples. You even go around anyone smoking dope and I'll turn in you in so fast you’ll still have a contact high. Do anything stupid, like break the fucking law, and you’ll have a minimum of ninety days. I’m talking break a corn stalk on a farm you don’t own, you’re getting locked up. I know you’re such a badass but let me tell you, state prison is nothing like juvenile detention.” He glares at me.

  “You been?” I glare back.

“No, but I know guys who have. I got a buddy a job at the local tattoo shop and he did seven years for shit you can’t even imagine. Piss me off and it’s going to piss him off, and he don’t like getting pissed off. Get your life together, kid. This is a fresh start. You’ve got a lot going for you.”

I snicker and roll my eyes. “I don’t know what my brother told you, but he lied.”

“You’re a hell of a football player. I’ve seen videos from when you were fifteen. And I’ve seen your art.”

My eyes lock on his. I’m going to kill my fucking brother.

“You know what the fuck you’re doing with a welder. It’s some impressive shit, Sutton. Focus on that and football and you’ll be fine. And your kid.”

I jump to my feet and get in his face. “Don’t fucking talk about my kid.” I mean that. I don’t want anyone knowing I have a kid, and not because she’s a secret but because I can’t have custody of her and until I can take care of my little girl, people don’t need to know shit about my business.

He lifts his hands and steps back. “Do what’s right for you. And her. You’d be surprised how much you actually like life.”

  ***

I start football practice today and school was shit because hot ass Leena Kenshaw wasn’t here to remind me why I keep coming back to this hell hole. It’s the third fucking day of school and she’s already not showing up. At least practice is actually fun and it helps me get out some aggression. All we did was run like we were going to die. Grant doesn’t fuck around and I can appreciate he’s not doing this ‘cause he’s some kid’s dad or an active member of the community. He just likes football and likes to win.

I lied and told Paige I’d get a ride home but I’m actually kind of sick of her bubbly personality. I appreciate what she’s doing for me, but I need a break.

My brother’s car, nor Paige’s is at the house when I show up so I grab the key from the planter. When I turn it in the knob, the door’s unlocked. I walk in and glance around. The TV’s on so I head that way. Rounding the corner, my eyes go from a show about serial killers to the fine piece of ass on the couch. Leena Kenshaw is sitting in the living room wrapped in a blanket with a beer in her hand. It’s fucking seventy-eight degrees out.

“The fuck you doing?” I toss my backpack and walk across the room, sitting in a chair before leaning onto my knees and staring at her. She’s covered up and that’s disappointing but she’s cute as hell even without makeup. I’m not mad she’s here.

“Breaking and entering your specialty?” She glares at me. “I could have shot you.”

“Uh, no. I didn’t break anything. I grabbed the key and unlocked the door that was already unlocked. Then I walked into my house you seem to have broken into. You got guns tucked under that blanket, do ya?”

She snickers. “Wouldn’t you like to know what’s under here.” She shifts and pulls the blanket tighter. “Maybe you need to go back to the mental ward. This is my sister’s house, asshole. Lock the door on your way out.”

I chuckle and sit back, rest my hands at the back of my head. “I live here. With your sister.” I grin and her eyes slowly move from the TV to me.

“My sister’s boyfriend lives here with her.” She says it as her eyes narrow and when I raise an eyebrow at her, it’s like she’s finally figured it out. “Holy shit.”

“Come on, Leena.” I laugh at her. “How could you forget me? I was your first love. You gave me your virginity.” I laugh louder, loving this.

Her mouth drops open and her fist grips the beer can so tight I hear the metal crinkle.

“You were not my first love. You were my first fuck.” She huffs and stands, letting the blanket fall to the couch. “And, congratulations, my worst.” She storms to the kitchen, tossing the now empty can in the trash and heading for the fridge.

“Come on. I think we said I love you the third or fourth time we had sex. Remember? Your dad was right behind the barn fixing the tractor.” I grin remembering being crazy about this girl. I stare at the beer in her hand as she walks back into the room, wondering if her sister lets her skip school and sit here and drink their beer all day. Not a bad life.

“I’ve blocked that part of my life out.” She cracks open the can and takes a long chug. “Lots of bad decisions.” Her eyes narrow in on me. “So you’re living here? In this little house?”

  “
Why? Your room any bigger? ‘Cause I wouldn’t mind sharing with you.” I look her over slowly.

“Not happening.” She growls. “Ever. Shit.” She runs her hand through her hair. “This is my hangout during the day, dude. Can’t you find somewhere else to curse with your presence?”

“It’s seven at night on a Wednesday. Don’t you gotta get home to family prayer time and dinner or somethin’?”

I finally earn a laugh from her but it’s not a happy one.

“No.” She grabs the blanket and wraps it around herself. “And don’t pretend you know anything about my family. Last I checked, wasn’t it you who killed my sister’s horse and tried ruining my dad’s farm?”

“That’s the last thing you remember about me? It wasn’t sneaking me into your bedroom while your family played games right below your room and we screwed around in your closet?”

“Trust me when I tell you it wasn’t as memorable as you’ve apparently thought all these years.” She rolls her eyes. “Grow up, Sutton.”

“Let me refresh your memory.” I stand and move to the couch, plopping next to her and she snickers, scooting over. Draping my arm across the back of the couch, I can reach her hair so I slide my fingers through the ends. “Why weren’t you in school?”

“I’m on the rag,” she says, eyes still lasered in on the TV but not as focused on the show as she wants me to believe.

“That sucks.” I drop my hand from touching her hair and look at the TV a minute. “Cramps and shit?” I ask before pulling her foot toward me and push my thumbs into the bottom, trying to give her a massage.

She slowly looks at me and pulls her foot back, the expression on that face of hers both confused and amused. “No. I just didn’t feel like putting up with school today. Not sure if you know this, but high school is the devil.”
