  Chapter One

  Blythe

It was a hot day in L.A., but what’s new, right?

I wished like hell I could open the windows and get some fresh air, but that was something hard to come by in this town. All I would get if I did that was a face full of smog, so I had to settle for A/C and a cool beer to help me chill out after work.

I was laying on my bed relaxing, icing a sore knee, and reading the latest tabloid when my cell phone rang. It was my old scene partner, Mallory.

She and I had gotten kind of close while working on a movie together. She had managed to make it in showbusiness and was a big movie star who had fairly recently been nominated for an Academy Award, all while I was still earning my dough as a lowly stuntwoman.

But currently she was on maternity leave, after having twins. Now that she had more time on her hands, we had talked on the phone and become even closer than when we had worked together.

“Hey, girl,” I greeted. “What’s the latest?”

“I have news,” she said, with what sounded like a big smile. “I am with child again.”

“Oh, that’s great, congrats,” I told her. “I mean, I think? Three kids sounds like a lot to me, but then again, so does one kid! So if you’re happy, I’m happy. When are you due?”

If you’re happy, I’m happy was definitely my mantra with Mallory. She had hooked up two of the hottest and richest movie star celebrities of our era – Blake and Clifton Haywood – and had gotten pregnant during a threesome.

Then she’d gone and married both of them! Most people would think that kind of relationship was crazy, but it seemed like it had worked for her and agreed with her, and that’s all that mattered.

I supported my friend in whatever she wanted to do; I was by no means a traditionalist myself. I just felt that whatever worked for people, worked. And if marrying two people at once worked for them, then that was fine by me.

“October,” she said definitively. “And yeah it’s good news even though I know people think it might be hard to have three. But with two fathers, there’s more help, right?”

  “Good point,” I acknowledged.

She continued chatting away excitedly, and I was so glad my friend had found love and happiness, even in an untraditional way.

“Blake kind of wants another son – a brother for Luke. But I would love to have another little girl – a sister for Leana. Clifton said he’s happy with either, or both. Not that we think we could have twins again – the way it happened the first time was like a huge fluke. But I think by the time it’s all said and done, we’ll likely have four kids total, anyway.”

“Well, that’s great, I’m glad for you,” I told her, my cheeks stretching into a smile. “We’ll have to do another baby shower. Those are always fun.”

“Yeah and we should get together soon,” added Mallory. “I’m not going to be much fun since I can’t drink, but…We can do lunch or something.”

“That would be awesome, yeah,” I agreed.

Just then, my phone buzzed. I looked at the screen to see that it was Hansley, my producer.

  “Oh, shit,” I said.

  “You gotta go?” asked Mal.

“Yeah, it’s Hansley,” I revealed. “This can’t be good if she’s calling me this late. Keep your fingers crossed that I still have a job!”

“Uh, oh. I’ll let you go,” said Em. “Laters.”

  I switched over to Hansley.

“Hi, Hansley,” I greeted. “What’s up?”

“Oh, my God, so much,” she said, sounding overwhelmed. “But the headline is that Claire broke her leg skiing over the weekend.”

“Oh, no, you’re kidding,” I said, putting a hand up to my forehead as I thought about the star actress having to be out. “So, we’re pushing back production?”

“No, the studio is pushing me to move forward, so I need a new female lead,” she said excitedly. “We’re going to do something with Claire next year when she’s back on her feet. But as they say in show business, when a door closes, a window opens.”

  “Um? Do they?”

“Probably. I don’t know. My point is, I want you for the lead,” said Hansley.

My breath caught in my chest and I sat up straight on my bed.

  Me?

  The lead in a movie?!

This was the big break I was hoping for!

“Oh, my God. Are you kidding?” I squeaked. “Most of my work has been in commercials or stunts. The studio green lit this?”

I held my hand over my chest; my heart was racing.

“Basically. Everyone in Hollywood is all about female empowerment these days and people remember you from that car insurance spot,” she explained. “I
mean, you’re not Flo from Progressive or the Geico frog—"

“Gecko,” I corrected. “It’s the Gecko frog.”

“Whatever. The point is, I sold them on you. I like your whole look and they do too. And I’m not gonna lie, it helps that Mallory Haywood – the current “It” girl in Hollywood that everyone is talking about after her crazy three-way marriage and then popping out twins, one belonging to each dad – I mean, talk about the things starlets will do to generate buzz, am I right? – is one of your besties and really talked you up and pushed for you to have any big role that comes up soon. But it wasn’t just that. Everyone loves you. We think we can sell this thing with your sexy self on the movie posters,” she explained. “What do you say? Wanna be my little movie star?”

“Oh, my God, yes!” I said excitedly.

I knew that Mallory hadn’t gotten with Blake and Clifton just to get more gossip and fame. In fact, she had confessed to me that she had been so afraid about what people would say about such an unorthodox relationship that she had hidden it for as long as she could.

How ironic that in the end, it had ended up working out better for her than she ever could have planned.

I guess it just goes to show you that you never know what life has in store and all you can do is follow your heart and trust your instincts.

But anyway, I told myself that that wasn’t the point. As much as I loved Mallory, now was not the time to concentrate on her. The focus of my mind should be on me and my big victory!

And once I gave myself permission to stop being distracted by what was going on with other people and to focus on myself, I found a bubble of happiness welling up so big inside me that I could swear it was about to burst.

I had to resist the urge to jump on the bed or squeal with joy. I had been working in Hollywood for years doing stunt-work or bit parts. This opportunity was a big deal. This could be my leap into superstardom.

“Great. Make sure you look over the script. You’re an actor, you know what to do,” Hansley said. “Things are going to be different on the set for you, now. Don’t let it all go to your head, okay, kid?”

“Thanks for this opportunity, Hansley,” I told her. “I won’t let you down.”

“I know you won’t,” she said confidently. “We’re gonna make a great picture. Chao babe.”

I was nervous and excited. The motion picture business could be pretty cutthroat. It wasn’t likely I was being handed this position because I was good, I was being handed this position because it was the cheapest, most efficient way to move the movie forward. We hadn’t shot more than a few scenes and the ones with Claire could easily be redone.

At first, I found myself wondering how I had stumbled into such good luck. But I immediately reminded myself that it wasn’t worth wasting time trying to figure out the “whys” when it comes to something like this. You never know why the studio does anything.

Sometimes it’s because of contractual obligations you had no knowledge of. Like when they promised product placement by a certain date.

Sometimes it was just because the math worked out. Like if they didn’t expect the movie with Claire to make money anyway, it kind of didn’t matter who was in the lead. If it was meant to be a tax write off, so much the better.

Whatever the reason was that this happened, it was a big jump up for me. Sure, I had been in plenty of other movies as a stunt person and double. I mean, I had plenty of credits, but to say the actual lines and be the actual character — my life was going to change.

Even if this movie totally bombed, I could always trot out this cred. I was the lead and they could never take that away from me.

I had to tell my roommates.

Layla was in the living room watching Netflix. She was always happy and positive. It was like she was a cheerleader from my high school days. You know, the one that never stopped saying nice things about everyone. She had that girl-next-door look too. Like somebody’s little sister — petite, dark hair, lithe body.

“Hey, guess what?” I announced walking into the room.

  Layla paused her show.

  “What?”

“Claire is out on the movie. Broke her leg,” I started to explain.

Layla, immediately assuming I was out of a job again, started to drop her expression. She looked like she was mentally preparing to console me, like the good friend that she was.

“But they want me to take her place!” I finished.

“Oh, my God!” she exclaimed, jumping up off of the couch and grabbing me by the hands. “That’s the lead! That’s the lead, right? She was the main character.”

  “Yep,” I nodded.

We both squealed and jumped around the living room.

“Oh, my God! Are you psyched? You have to be so psyched!” she squeaked.

“I’m pretty nervous about it, actually,” I laughed.

  “That’s crazy. I mean… Well, no offense.”

“None taken. I was as shocked by the news as you are,” I told her.

“What exactly happened?” Layla asked, setting back onto the couch. “Tell me everything.”

I climbed onto the couch next to her and pulled my legs up under me.

“Claire broke her leg skiing over the weekend. We haven’t shot that many scenes, so they’re just moving on without her,” I explained. “I just got off the phone with the producer.”

“Wow, that’s like… That’s like one in a million!” Layla said, clearly sounding shocked. She grabbed my hand again. “That’s amazing. We have to go out and celebrate.”

Harlow walked in. My other roommate was kind of the reverse of Layla — blonde, glasses and dead pan. Harlow’s sarcastic comments could cut down anyone and when she was in a foul mood — which she often was – that girl could suck the joy right out of the room.

She was coming in from work, which she hated. Harlow was the assistant to a well-known character actor; he treated her like trash, and she was always extra angry after work. So, it was going to be dicey just to talk to her.

“Hey, what’s up,” she mumbled, trying to avoid us.

“Harlow!” said Layla cheerily, ignoring our roommate’s apparent bad mood. “Guess what? Blythe just got the lead in her movie! Isn’t that amazing?”

“The lead?” Harlow said, her tone surprised. “Wait. The lead actress? What happened?”

She set down her ever-present cup of coffee and her purse and came to stand in front of the couch.

“Claire broke her leg skiing!” said Layla, sounding a little too happy.

“Wow, you are so lucky,” said Harlow, crossing her arms in front of her chest and looking thoughtful. “This is big. I only wish my career would take off after someone’s horrible tragic accident.”

“Can you not be your normally dark, deadpan self?” I requested.

“What fun would that be?” smiled Harlow, then she collapsed into the gray side chair and hung her feet over the arm.

“Much more fun,” replied Layla. “Like ten times more fun.”

“I disagree,” said Harlow turning her nose up. “Did you call Mallory yet?”

“Oh, my God!” squealed Layla so loud, she startled both of us. “We should totally get her and have a girl’s night out!”

“Okay, but I must warn you,” I said with a grin. “Mallory is pregnant again.”

“When you’re fucking the two hottest guys in America, that happens. It really was just a matter of time,” said Harlow. “I’d be on one or both of them, all day every day. She may have been surprised, but I’m not.”

“Actually, it’s a planned pregnancy,” I corrected her. “So, if she does come, no more comments about her relationship situation.”

“Hey, I’m an admirer,” admitted Harlow. “Two beautiful guys and the freedom to still go out with friends because they’re good dads who watch the babies. That sounds great to me.”

“At least you can sound positive about something,” said Layla. She pointed at me. “You call Mallory and I
ll start getting ready! Oooh! This is going to be fun!”

Contrary to popular belief, living with women isn’t easier. Sure, the living room might not be as messy, but, I mean, with a guy… They’re usually ready in like five minutes. With two female roommates, you’re constantly waiting for the hair dryer or trying to get space at the mirror for makeup, especially when there is only one bathroom.

Fortunately, Harlow acted mostly like a guy when it came to getting ready, so it was mostly just me and Layla vying for space and hair dryers.

I was ready to celebrate, and I had a feeling that tonight was going to be a night to remember!

  Chapter Two

  Blythe

With Harlow driving, we headed over to Santa Monica and picked up Mallory. Despite the fact that she was pregnant, she certainly was not showing. She looked really good in her tight-fitting black mini dress, having already gotten back down to her pre-baby weight.

Pre-babies, I corrected myself mentally, remembering that she’d had twins.

Mallory certainly was impressive, to be able to bounce back so quickly. And then to get pregnant again so quickly.

“I can’t believe you’re pregnant again already,” I mulled out loud, as she got into the car. “You just lost all the weight.”

“I know,” she said sadly, putting her head against the seat in front of her. “And it took forever! But we really wanted another kid, so…”

“Yeah,” I told her, as if I knew how that went, when, really, I had no clue. “But in any case, I’m glad you were able to come out tonight, especially on such short notice.”

“Are you kidding?” she said. “I love getting out. Especially with Naomi being in Sacramento again… I feel like I never get to go out and do anything fun. So thanks for inviting me.”

“No problem!” I said, cringing a little inside since she’d mentioned Naomi.

That was her bestie, supposedly, but she was never around. Now that Mallory and I had become close friends, I couldn’t help but be a little jealous of this elusive Naomi. I feared that whenever she came back from working at her job as an important legislative aide, she’d whisk Mallory away from.
