  Chapter 1

Sophia sat at the window seat curled up, staring sightlessly at the birds nesting in the giant oak tree in the yard. It was the middle of summer and the morning had already dawned bright and sunny, indicating that it was going to be another scorching hot day. Her mother had already left for the bookstore she operated and she had pretended to still be asleep when she heard the door of her room open softly. It was too soon for her to talk about it and even though she knew her mother was always supportive of her; she was not yet ready to share. Besides she preferred to do her crying alone.

She still could not believe that a week day ago her life had been relatively happy. She had gone to the doctor after feeling nauseous and missing her period and had been told that she was pregnant. Surely Jeremy would be as happy as she was. They had been going out together for a year and were even thinking about settling down. She spent more time at his place than she did here and things had been going so good when she had left the doctor to rush to his house to tell him the good news.

The day replayed itself in her head like a horrible movie. She had seen his car parked outside and had smiled as she turned her key inside the lock. She had not heard the sounds until she had ventured upstairs and even so she had not thought anything of it until she had opened the door to the bedroom.

Her hands clenched as she remembered the passionate embrace and the loud sounds of lovemaking from the same bed she had slept in, made love in; the bed she had thought of as theirs. She had stood there, rooted to the spot. It was the girl who saw her first, and her heart twisted when she recognized the blonde receptionist at the office where he worked as a Sales Representative for a pharmaceutical company. She had uttered a scream and Jeremy had turned to see what had caught her attention.

“Sophia what the hell are you doing here?” he had jumped off the bed and grabbed the pants on the floor, hurriedly covering his nakedness. The girl had scrambled off the bed and headed for the bathroom.

“Sophia?” he had approached her cautiously. She had allowed him to lead her downstairs into the living room. The girl was still in the bathroom. “Why didn’t you call?” he asked, pacing the small length of the room, his hands going through his brown hair tinged with blonde highlights. His dark blue eyes were accusing as he looked at her standing there.

“Because I rushed over here to tell you the good news that we are going to have a child together.” She told him finally speaking. She was numb and she just wanted to go somewhere and process what she had just seen.

“You’re pregnant?” he stopped right in front of her; his frown heavy. “I thought you were on the pill.”

“I came off it for a little bit because I was having allergic reactions and I did tell you.” She reminded him, feeling cold.

“I don’t want a child Sophia, I thought you knew that,” he told her brutally. His voice softened a little bit as he saw her recoiled. “Look baby, I care about you a lot but right now I have a career to think about and a child does not factor into it. I can come up with half of the cash to get rid of it and we can move on from there.”

Sophia looked at him in distaste. How could she have thought she was in love with this monster? How had she not seen what kind of a person he was? How could she have been so blinded by his good looks not to notice that he was nothing but a shallow low life?

“I am not aborting my child,” she told him, pulling her shoulders back; her mind set. “And the fact that you would want me to do that; is something that I would never be able to come to grips with.”

“Look Sophia,” he came and reached out his hands to grip her arms but she resisted. “I am sorry you feel betrayed but that’s the way I feel. I am not parent material and I thought you knew that.”

She had left shortly after and even then the girl had still been upstairs. She had sat in her car for a long time before she had driven off to go home.

Her friend had warned her about him; but she had always chalked it down to him being a Caucasian and she an African American and that was why the objection was there. She had met him at an office party and he had come right up to her and asked her out. She had turned him down at first, she had told herself she was not ready for a relationship. She had never had one before and had endured the usual teasing if she said she was saving herself for marriage. He had been her first and she had thought they would have ended up married and spend the rest of their lives together.

She had recently lost her job as an Executive secretary for a large corporation and had put off looking for another one. Now she was pregnant and alone. Who was going to hire her?

Her father had died when she was seven years old and it had been only her and her mother from then on. Sybil Cameron had made sure that she had not lacked anything and apart from the four years she had gone to college to get an associate degree in business studies she had always been there with her mother.

She had told her mother the same evening she got home and Sybil had been so upset she had wanted to go and confront Jeremy.

“Mom, it’s my problem,” Sophia had insisted. “He is not worth you getting so worked up over.”

“What are you going to do?” Sybil had asked her daug
hter sympathetically. The girl had saved herself only to be taken in by a con artist and three quarters of a man and she felt like giving him a proper beating.

“I am keeping my child!” Sophia had said promptly, much to her mother’s relief.

“You know you can always count on me honey,” Sybil had clasped the girl in her arms; giving her a reassuring hug.

“I know Mom.” Sophia had to fight back the tears from falling.

Later in her room, she had sat on the small stool in front of her dressing table and stared in the mirror. She had never put much stock in her appearance but she knew that she was very attractive and had been called beautiful by some. Her thick unprocessed hair had natural waves she always caught up in a thick plait at the nape of her neck. She had large dark eyes and long lashes and a beautiful coffee and cream complexion; but her most noticeable feature was her full lips and a smile that lit up her face. She had her mother’s petite figure but was offset by a rather ample bosom that she had despaired having when she was much younger.

She had never told her friends but she had secretly been saving herself for the man she would give her heart to. She was old fashioned enough to hope that such a relationship would lead to marriage but now that was all shattered to pieces. She had not told her best friend Lorna yet and she knew what she was going to say: ”I told you he was no good.” And she could not bear to listen to criticism right now, she was just too vulnerable.

With a tearful sigh she brought herself back to the present. Lorna had called her and invited her out to lunch but she had made the excuse that she had some things to deal with, which was in fact true. She had signed up with a placement agency to be placed in something temporary and she need to update her resume. Her mother had told her she could always come to the bookstore and help her out; the pay would not be much but at least she would be earning something. She had told her she was still thinking about it.

She had cried her last tears last night, she thought firmly and she was not going to cry anymore. Jeremy had not called her and it pained her heart to know that she had never meant that much to him in the first place. She was carrying his child and he had not even called to find out if she was okay. So much for that, it was going to be her and her child from now on. No men

Christopher Tang stepped from the elevator and strode down the passageway that led to his suite of is offices, barely noticing the longing looks from the women who worked for him. He was a very attractive man with a tall slim athletic build, exotic black eyes and black hair neatly combed back from a broad forehead. He was dressed this morning in an expensive pin striped dark gray suite and a red tie; his shoes highly polished.

He believed in dressing for success and did not tolerate sloppy dressing in his office. A frown knit his brow as he came to the outer office and saw his very pregnant secretary; remembering that she was due to go on leave in the next three weeks. He was not looking forward to it because she had been with him from the inception of the company three years ago and knew not only the ins and outs of the business but also what he liked and disliked.

“Good morning Christopher,” the thirty-four year old woman said with a smile. Even with her belly protruding in front of her she still managed to look smart and was still her efficient best. He made sure to know all his staff and their families and knew that she had been married for ten years and was just now having a child. “I made the alterations to the document as you requested and your coffee is waiting on your desk. Oh and Donald called while you were out and I told him I would have you call him back.”

“Thanks Tiffany.” He smiled at her briefly. “I hope your temporary replacement will be half as efficient as you are.”

“I will make sure of that,” the woman said with a smile.

Christopher nodded and went inside his office, closing the door behind him. He had a meeting planned for later in the afternoon but wanted to catch up on a report he had received from the P.I. firm he had hired to source some information from him. He had been called a shark in the business world because he had a habit of swooping in and buying companies that were failing and renovating them and either selling them for a very high profit or sending his people in to operate the business. He was a very fair business man but had little or no tolerance for shady business dealings. The latest acquisition was a pharmaceutical company that had been ailing for the past three years due to bad management and dishonest employees. He had made a suggestion to the board and even though he did not necessarily need their approval, he had run it by them. He had called a meeting because he was on the verge of making the bid and he wanted to know their thoughts.

“Tiffany,” he depressed the intercom button. “Get me Wellington on the line please.”

“Yes sir,” Tiffany answered and he released the button.

While he waited for the call from the CFO, Christopher went and poured himself some coffee, taking a sip in appreciation. He reminded himself to give a hefty bonus to Tiffany before she went off on maternity leave. The woman was a gem.

“The figures don’t add up,” he said without preamble as Marcus Wellington came on the line.

“I have done some adjustments and I am sending it by email right away.” Marcus said swiftly, fully aware that even though he had an MBA from Harvard; no one could get anything past Christopher Tang; the man saw and noticed everything.

“Stay on the line.” Christopher instructed. He went into his email and clicked on the spreadsheet with the figures, a little frown knitting his brow. “The profit margin does not make sense; they have been losing for the past two years and yet this is saying that sales went up for the past six months. What’s going on?”

“I am checking into that as we speak Christopher,” the man said nervously.

“I need a report by the end of the day.” He hung up the phone without waiting for an answer.

“Tiffany get me an appointment with the head of Meiger Pharmaceuticals.”

“Good to see you out of the house honey,” Sybil commented as she looked up and saw her daughter coming through the doorway. She noted with sadness the puffiness of the beautiful dark eyes and the strain on her mouth. “I need to do some inventory of the books that came in just this morning. You know me and figures, can’t tell whether one and one makes two or four and today being Monday makes it worse.”

“I know Mom,” Sophia smiled at her mother briefly. She had actually gotten a call that had bolstered her spirits. She had been placed temporarily with a top firm called Tang Holdings and she was supposed to go in the next two weeks to let the secretary show her the ropes. She had decided to get out of the house and get some much needed fresh air and maybe give her mother a helping hand. She still had not told Lorna anything and she knew she would have to tell her eventually.

Sophia sat crossed leg on the straw mat spread on the parquet floor and delved into the box of new books that had been delivered. Normally she liked reading and even though they were mostly children books, she would have spent some time going through the different stories but not right now, she was having a hard time taking her mind off her situation. How could she not have seen the type of person he was? Was it that she had been blinded by his looks and had not bothered to see inside of him?

She had foolishly put all her romantic ideals on a man who had not the slightest inkling of what romance was all about and she was beginning to wonder if she had any idea herself. She had listened to her mother recount stories of her and her father and how happy they had been and how the family had been completed when she came along. She picked up a ‘Nancy Drew’ mystery and thumbed through the pages fondly, remembering the nights she had stayed up when her mother had gone to bed to read voraciously to her heart’s content. Those had been such simple times, she thought putting the book aside.

“Whew,” Sylvia said fanning her cheeks vigorously as she came over to join her daughter on the floor. “A break finally.” She took up the bo
ok her daughter had just put away. “I remember how much you used to hide and read these.” Sophia looked at her startled and she laughed. “You thought I was sleeping but I would come by to check on you and see you reading. I thought of telling you to turn off the light and go on to bed but I decided against it. Reading never hurt anyone yet so I left you alone.” She replaced the book and turned to face her daughter.

“I know you think this is the worst thing that ever happened to you honey but I have news for you. You are pregnant and the man has left you to travel this road alone. It’s not the end; it’s the beginning of a wonderful experience and I assure you that I am going to be here for you no matter what. It doesn’t matter how big and adult you are; you are still my baby and I promise you I will be there for you when you have your baby.”

Sophia reached out and clasped her mother’s hands tightly. “I hope to one day be half the mother you are and I really appreciate your support.” Her throat constricted and even though she had said she had cried her last tears, she could feel her eyes welling up.

“Let it out baby, tears are steps to healing.” With that Sylvia pulled her daughter into her arms as they girl let down her guard and let the tears flowed freely.

“That lousy bastard!” Lorna was beside herself with wrath. “Let me go to his workplace right now and bawl him out for the low life he is.”

They were having ice cream in the park near to the bookstore. It was early afternoon and the sun was still high in the sky and there were parents and children doing different activities. Lorna had stopped at the book store demanding to know what was going on because she had not been getting through to her. The girl had been friends with her since high school and although their career path had differed; Lorna being a junior high school teacher and a pastry chef on the side; they had remained friends. She had little or no regards for men after one had broken her heart in college. She had warned that she was through with men but for the past few weeks she had been dating a sous chef where she worked part-time.
