I don’t know why I should trust Gavin any more than I would trust the other two boys, but I guess it would be good to have somebody know where I’m going.

  Just in case.

I lift the phone to my ear as I start down the sidewalk away from our new house—away from the moving van, away from Mom and Dad.

Gavin answers on the first ring.

“I’m in Ohio now,” I say. “I’m on my way to see Chip and Jonah.”

  I hear Gavin gulp.

  “Now?” he says.

His voice squeaks. Is it because of puberty or panic?

  “Yes,” I say. “Now.”

I don’t know what I’m walking toward, but it feels right. It feels like what I have to do.

This is who I am now.
