Chapter 1
Jakob
After two hours in this cramped interrogation room, I craved a breath of fresh air. The room stunk of sweaty, nasty body odor and, listening to this bastard suspect drone on, was making me crazy. My partner and best friend, Matt, shifted in his seat and pressed his knee against mine. There was my signal. Matt was just as tired of this conversation as I was. Time for me to take over. It’s kind of like on TV where you see the good cop and the bad cop go after the bad guy. Time for me to be the bad cop. Most of the time, it worked like a charm, and I was sure today would be no exception. Matt turned to me. Showtime.
I slammed my hands down on the table, stood up, and my chair clattered to the floor. I leaned over the table and stared down the suspect. His eyes got huge, and his pulse was rising. He was scared. Perfect.
“You know what? I am sick of listening to you. We both know that you raped that girl, no matter how many times you say it was consensual.” I pointed at him and continued. “You raped her like the animal that you are.”
“No! She wanted it!”
“She wanted to be raped?” My eyebrows rose, and I tilted my head. I knew I had caught him off guard. The shock of hearing me speak had thrown him.
“Yes…No…I…I loved her.”
“You loved her? So, you don’t love her anymore?”
“N-No…No I mean, I love her. I could never hurt her.”
“Do you want to know what I think? You confessed your love, and she rejected you. I bet she even laughed at you, and you snapped. She had to pay.”
Matt’s foot nudged against mine. He was going to crack, and Matt sensed it too. “Leonard, I know you wanted to show her that you are a real man. You wanted to punish her. And you know what? I understand.”
“Y-you do?” He stared at me. “Understand, I mean?”
“Yes, of course. You confessed your love to her, and she rejected you. She needed to pay for rejecting you.”
“I…no…I... she…”
“Come on, Leonard, she hurt you. She hurt your feelings and made fun of you.” I pressed on, and my voice got louder and louder. “And that's what you did. You punished her by raping her.”
After hours of interrogation, he finally broke. The words we had been waiting for came spilling out of his mouth. “I… she hurt me… the things she said. She said a pig would be a better boyfriend than me. She said I was weak and a fool. She said she would never be with a coward. I had to show her how wrong she was. She said she needed a real man. I am a real man. She needed to see what I could give her. And I made sure that she would never forget. I am the only real man she will ever KNOW!” He shouted.
“Because she deserved it. You raped her because she needed to pay for her rejection.”
“Damn right, I did.” Leonard yelled. After a moment, he realized what he just said. “I… I want a Lawyer.”
It didn’t matter. He confessed.
“Yeah, you get a lawyer.” I turned away from him and shook my head. Matt followed close behind. “She's going to live, but you're going to rot in jail.” I said over my shoulder.
I stepped out of the interrogation room and took a deep breath, how I hat
ed these cases. The life of a twenty-one-year-old student destroyed. For what? Because a bastard like Leonard couldn't take the rejection. I shook my head. For years, these cases have worn me down. I had to deal with the sickness of society day in and day out.
In these moments I craved a Little Boy. I did not desire a little boy as in a child, that thought was disgusting. No, I wanted an adult man who participated in Age play. That man would be my Little Boy, and he would let me care for him. Then as I cared for him, the nasty stress of the world would fall away. A voice shook me from my thoughts.
“Good job in there.”
I looked up and saw Captain Richard Benson in the doorway across from the interrogation room. “I’m impressed. You got him to confess before he lawyered up.”
“Yeah, at least Anna will get justice for what he did to her. She’s still in the hospital but getting better every day,” I answered sadly. “I’m glad Leonard will pay for what he did. That should help her heal. The confession won’t get back what he stole from her, but I hope she will be comforted knowing he will never hurt anyone again.”
“Yeah, we can only hope it helps. I got off the phone with the District Attorney about ten minutes ago. He is going to offer a plea deal that will spare Anna having to go through a trial. This confession just made it so much easier.”
“She has suffered enough. She does not need the scrutiny of a trail. Let me go get everything ready for the District Attorney.”
“No. Matt can do that. I want you to meet someone.”
“Someone?” I exchanged a look with Matt, who shrugged and left to finish our report. Captain Benson motioned for me to join him in the office where he stood.
“What's going on?”
“We have a delicate situation, and I need your help. We got a new Intelligence Analyst Officer that just transferred in from Boston.”
“A delicate situation? What does that have to do with me?”
“Because the Chief doesn't want a repeat of the events from Boston.”
“Okay.” I was having a hard time following the Captain’s thoughts. “Wait. Start from the beginning. What happened in Boston? Or am I not allowed to know?”
“Dr. Samuel Baker is some sort of tech genius, and he decided to join the force because he wanted to do something good with his various skills. He fit in well in his department, and it seemed things were going well.” Captain Benson continued. “A month ago, he went to Internal Affairs to report harassment and discrimination.”
“So, he was targeted because he´s not a, quote-unquote, true cop or some crap like that?”
“Well, I’m sure that was part of it, but it’s also because he´s gay.”
The light bulb went off.
“I see. Not that it's anyone’s business what people do in their free time, but some officers brought this guy’s private life into the workplace?”
“Yes, exactly. Boston Internal Affairs promised swift action due to the zero-tolerance of sexual harrasment. So, both Officers got suspended for two weeks and got warned that another incident would see them kicked off the force. Unfortunately, the threat of losing their jobs did not stop them. A week after the suspension began, the two officers stalked Baker. They jumped him while he was walking home from grocery shopping. They beat him so bad Baker ended up in the hospital.”
“They beat him up, and he got transferred?” I snapped. Captain Benson held up his hands.
“Whoa, easy tiger, and don’t give me that look. It is not what you think. Baker requested the transfer. He said he couldn't go back to work there, but he wanted to keep working for the police.”
“And the two officers?”
“Got kicked off the force.”
“Good.” Now I understood why the Chief wanted me to help. I could smooth Baker’s transition and help him feel more comfortable. I didn’t think that kind of behavior could happen here, at least not to that extent. But it only took one person. I remember when I came out, there were lots of questionable jokes. One Detective did ask for a transfer because he didn’t want to work with some gay wannabe cop. But that was it.
“Ok, so, what do you need from me?”
“Meet him, welcome him, show him that we are a team, and be there for him if there are any problems.”
“So, I’m a babysitter now?”
“Really, Jakob? You know better than that. I want you to be his mentor. There is no one else on the force that would be better for this assignment than you.”
Captain Benson led me down the hall to a small office on the other end of the building. The layout of the office took me by surprise. Maybe I was seeing what I wanted to because I had just been thinking about having a Little Boy. My gut told me this was the office of a Little. I may be way off base, but I would bet a month’s salary to back up my gut feeling.
His desk was neat and well organized but bright and happy. He had animal and dinosaur figurines lined up in front of his monitor. Cartoon and animal stickers hung all around the outside of the sides and top of the monitor. His mouse was rainbow-colored and sat atop a Snoopy mouse pad. A golden yellow cup with a picture of a cartoon turtle held his pens, and I was able to make out a coloring book peeking out from under some papers. Beside his desk, there was an open backpack with little pouches of fruit snacks sitting on top of some fluffy colorful fabric. One of the bottom drawers was partially open, and I could just see the edge of a stuffed animal. All of that had my Little radar pinging, and it was pinging hard.
Someone gasped behind us. When I turned around, I froze. In the doorway stood the most adorable looking guy. I shook my head and looked again. Yep, still freaking adorable. He had a head full of light brown curls that needed to be touched. They looked so soft. He wore dark-rimmed glasses, and there was a blush rising on his cheeks. In his hand, he held another colorful cup. I took a deep breath and caught the scent of something sweet. He wore a grey t-shirt with a dancing cartoon Snoopy, dark blue jeans, with bright yellow converse sneakers that finished off his outfit.
My work and my private life followed a certain set of rules. For example, my head ruled over my heart and feelings were secondary to everything else. But at this moment, the rules of my life just got turned upside down then thrown out a window. People talked about love at first sight, and I always thought it was just crap. But God help me, I believe them now. My heartbeat faster, and my palms started to sweat, and I knew my search was over. Now I just needed to figure out a way to make this adorable man mine. I stood staring at him until Captain Benson cleared his throat.
“Ah, there you are, Doctor Baker.”
“I…that is…well…I mean….” He took a deep breath. “You don't need to call me Doctor Baker. Samuel is fine.”
“Ok then Samuel, this is Detective Jakob Lannister. Jakob, meet Samuel Baker, our new Intelligence Analyst.”
“Nice to meet you, Samuel.” I held out my hand. Samuel hesitated for a moment before he placed his petite hand in mine. It was soft and warmed up from his drink. I am not a tall man, but next to my Sam, I stood a foot or so higher. I was in so much trouble. When he finally looked up at me, I could see into his bright green eyes. “And welcome to the NYPD.”
“Th... Th- Thank you.”
“So, you transferred here from Boston. How do you like New York so far?”
“It´s… it´s nice?”
Samuel glanced towards his desk as if he feared that the Captain or I would say something about it. Poor boy. I had to save him.
“I see you already made yourself at home.” Samuel paled and glanced up at me. I didn’t miss how he flinched. “I think it looks great. We all need something bright and cheery with all the crap we see each day. Are you planning on putting some pictures on the walls? They are so grey.”
“They are?” Samuel gazed at the walls as if he had never seen them before, and I smiled.
“Yeah. I can't wait to see what you hang up. Maybe some neat animal pictures.”
“Really?”
“Yes, really. Your
walls are boring, and grey compared to this cheery desk.” I grinned when a small smile appeared on Samuel’s face. He visibly relaxed. I wondered what those bastards in Boston had done to this sweet man? Before he could say anything else, my phone pinged with an incoming alert. Moments later, the Captain’s phone followed. Captain Benson pulled out his phone and checked his message.
“The District Attorney is here. Time to go.”
“I'll be right there.” Samuel realized he still held my hand. He let go and stepped aside to let the Captain out of his office. Once Captain Benson left, I stepped closer to Samuel again.
“I don’t want to overstep, but I know why you got transferred.”
“You do?” And the tension was back.
I reached out and took his hand.
“Yes. I just want to say that you are safe here, okay?”
“O-Okay?”
“I mean it, Samuel. If someone gives you a hard time or you just want to talk, you know where to find me.” Samuel just stared up at me, and I sank into his beautiful eyes. I shook my head. I was still at work, and the DA was waiting.
“Look, I have to go, but please reach out to me if you need anything.” I gave his hand one last squeeze and let go. I turned to leave when a small voice stopped me.
“Detective?”
“Yes?” I turned around and saw that Samuel was staring at the floor and biting his lip. “Samuel?”
“I… thank you.”
“Anytime.” Now it was my turn to bite my lip to stop myself from calling him, my sweet boy. And God, I wanted to say it so bad, especially when Samuel looked up at me and gave me a genuine smile that reached his eyes. “And again, welcome to New York, Samuel.”
