t the center of the city was a tree with fiery red leaves that burned white out. To the naked eye it looked a regular tree. It took the eye of a majestic creature to see the beauty of it. Just like it took the same type of eye to see Root. Root is one of the guardians of the realm. He is of the Barktree lone line of people. They've been protecting the lands since the 1st of the majestic kind tapped the column of his body and breathed life into him. Limb is his partner in protection. They are the first line of defense. They keep the non-majestic out as well as those who would attempt to do harm to the majestic one. It is also their place to know who exits the realm and for what purpose.

"You are of greatness, we mustn't allow you to pass."

"Not that I planned to exit the realm but what are you talking about?"

  "Do you see it, Limb?"

"Of course, I do. We must send word."

  "No need. We know."

A male in the highest of majestic robes appeared before them. His golden eyes sparkled even in the night sky's light.

"Maj Assist," both beings bowed low and he returned the gesture.

I bowed as well. I didn't know who he was, but I felt the urge to do so.

"Come or he'll come to us."

  "Who?"

He exchanges a smile with the brothers and I realize I may be missing something important. A bright green opening appears next to the new individual and he groans.

  "Too late."

"You should've known he wouldn't stay away," one of the brothers states with a chuckle.

  "Ramsy, have you collected her?"

"Father, I just arrived. I'm fast but not that fast."

"You are, and you know it. Your mother grows impatient."

"I am not the one who opened the doorway, you did? Yes, we're impatient to see her but I could've

  The Change

  Abigail

“What are you doing, Gail?” his face showed no emotion, as per usual. She rolled her eyes as he looks her over once more. “What are you two supposed to be?”

  “We’re gladiators in suits,”

“Isn't it obvious? I'm Olivia Pope. I'm wearing a red hat and a red suit.”

She moves her hands up and down the suit before striking a pose.

“First off, I hope you don’t think being black automatically gives you the right to be Olivia Pope.”

Her haughty expression tells me that she clearly believed that which makes me snort out a laugh.

“Of course it does. You’re Mellie to my Olivia.”

It’s my turn to mimic her previous gesture and stance. Her hands are currently crossed over her chest.

“That’s likely.” I point in her direction while looking at Stefanos.

He returns to his focus to his paper which is his clear way of telling us he’s not getting involved in our little snit.

“Anyway, why would your red suit and hat make it obvious you are Olivia Pope? BTW: very telling statement there with you choosing the red, Cass.”

“We’re Gaurdionnes, Abs. Of course, I’m going with the red. Warriors are likely to get blood on their garments. This will allow it to blend in while I continue to fight. Yours doesn’t.”

I look to Stefanos again and catch his smirk as he continues to read that stupid paper. One thing I hate is when my bestie does something I haven’t been able to accomplish often without even trying. Stefanos may be mine in the mated souls sense but that’s all. We’re still trying to figure out our places in each other’s lives.

“Yeah okay. Valid point. Whatever. It still doesn’t make it obvious that’s who you are. Besides, Olivia Pope wears white and I'm wearing the bigger, white hat.”

Stefanos chuckles, actually chuckles, before standing. His robes quickly shift into a posh Brooks Brothers look.

“Who is Olivia Pope is unimportant.” At both of our slightly outraged gasps, Stefanos tilts his head in annoyance. He lifts a coat from the chair he just vacated then fixes cufflinks he didn’t previously have before speaking again. “Which one of you is Olivia Pope is not important. That's not the reason you were sent forward. Plus, you're a little bit too early. The grandchildren that you're supposed to be here to help aren’t born yet. Neither is that show. That show is popular ...” he pauses to check his watch as if the answer is there. Apparently, it is because he lifts his head with a time frame. “Around 2007. You'll be a grandmother then.”

“A grandmother?” I ask as I wave my hand, conjuring a looking glass ... mirror, yes mirror to look at myself. “Does that mean I have to act all old and stuff?”

It’s Cassia’s turn to sound outraged.

“Hell no! We don't do old.”

“Gail you will have to act your age every once in a while,” Stefanos states in a fairly exasperated tone.

Gail wants to laugh as she looks at the man who promised to remain at her side for all eternity, even if it means death. The bond it created meant they’d share their life forces one with another forever. How he was going to put up with her insanity all that time, she didn’t know. She didn’t think he truly understood what he’d signed up for.

“Fine I guess I'll welcome that. Cast nope don't even start I don't want to hear it.. Look you were said to watch her. I act my age when I need to.

“Hey! Wait a second, so am I.”

  The Truth

  Stephanos

  First born First Sight

First in line, drawn to night

“You didn’t but I did. If you recall when we were younglings, you and brother would regularly tease me about one thing. It was the one thing neither of you could understand about me. Mother would repeatedly say ...”

“I recall her words as clearly as if she were speaking them now. ‘Stefanos’ ability to see what those do not or what others are quickly dismissive of, will one day save more than his life.’ It was said so often I wondered if she said just to make you feel better about your abilities being so much lesser than our own.”

Her words would’ve once upon a time cut deep given they were coming from his deep affection for his one and only sister. Having lived the life he had and seen the cruelties of his bloodline, they were little more than pebbles thrown against a mountainside.

“I once treasured your words and valued your opinion.”

“Yes, you tended to take heed to the warnings in them.”

“Those days are long gone. They left the day you attempted to harm to one who could not yet defend themselves. Or so you thought?”

Gail’s head tilted slightly. It was as if she was trying to work out what she’d just heard. She was probably recalling the last time he’d used those words. It was in reference to the child, her child. He’d referred to her little girl as “one who could not yet defend themselves.” It was right after he’d berated her for not focusing on the livelihood of the young witch. He’d practically accused her of putting the child in harm’s way be leaving her defenseless and alone.

The truth hadn’t been brought to his attention until much later. Things had not been clear to him. Not until the recent eves when all had rung true with such clarity he couldn’t resist the urge to openly weep in response.

“I tire of this charade and am bored of the trivial machinations I’m being subjected to by your underhanded allegations.”

He watched as she made a slight motion before tapping the finger of one hand and turning the other over. With the one motion, his sister’s wrist was bound to prevent her from making any gestures with her right hand. Stefanos knew she favored that one

“Roasted evil bitch flesh sounds like a tasty treat right about now. Doesn’t it, Cas?”

“Oooh yes! I’ll have mine with a side of fried rice and mixed veggies.”

  Acknowledgments

It’s always a difficult task to recall all the names of those who had a hand in the development of a work. I never want to forget anyone, so I make it easier on myself and say thank you to each set of eyes who read this work then gave me feedback. I’m grateful for the Sparrows who keep me entertained and remain supportive throughout this journey. To each and every reader, you are the reason I write. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have a purpose beyond penning novels for myself. Thank you to each and every one of you. I hope you enjoyed what you read and will come back to see what’s next.

Thanks for reading! Please add a short review and let me know what you thought!

Thank you for taking the time to read my book. I hope you enjoyed what you read. Words could never truly express what it is that I feel when I see a post about my work on any of the social media sites or web pages. For every review that is posted my heart grows a little more. This started out as a passing thought. I didn’t know if this would be embraced or if people would ever care about each of these characters as much as I’ve come to love them.

I hope that you see a little of yourself in these characters. Sharing their stories has come to make me happy and I am thrilled to have them embraced by those who are willing to give them a place to be heard. Real life is truer than fiction. Here’s hoping that it will forever mean there is a beacon of hope for one that is lost. I am a Sparrow allowing my imagination to take flight, are you?
