  Prologue

No amount of time will erase an action done, whether it be good or evil. At least that's the way it works in Beastmora, the dimension of beasts, the former one of humans. For many years they lived in peace, each keeping balance of the Earth. They only took what was needed and giving back to their lands. The divide between the two began when humans crossed the territory borders seeking to take more and more resources for themselves. Eventually, this led to the endangerment of the planet. The human's greed and apathy led to the kings and queens of the other seven species to unite and place humans into a separate dimension. With the two worlds split apart, they began to differentiate between each other. The human year became the beast cycle, and months turned into phases.

Flash forward a couple of thousand cycles, the fae rebelled against their royals and destroyed the fae as a species, now cursed to roam the planet as mindless beings living off the power of others by being their servants. As a result of the annihilation of the fae, the ruling species turned to each other to blame, thus beginning the Fae War, only to be resolved by the children marked with a moon of gold. They became known as the Golden Six, warriors from each of the remaining species chosen by the Creator, that threw their weapons down, disobeyed their rulers and created a new era of peace.

In this new light of peace, a marriage between the Prince of Wolves and the Princess of Vampires was arranged. This union marked the very first interspecies marriage in the history of Beastmora. However, this peace was interrupted by the birth of their first child who came into this world a demon. The child infected the Prince of Wolves, thus starting the spread of an infection known as Demonism. The disease spread through Beastmora as a plague, tearing families apart and leaving the world in chaos until the Golden Six banded together to rid the world of demons. They slew the infected Prince of Wolves, thus erasing their consciousness and making them no longer a threat.

Even though the demons are gone, the halflings, those stuck in mid-transformation between beast and demon still pose a threat to Beastmora. The Global Supernatural Investigation or the GSI was founded by the remaining beasts to protect their world but are the demons truly gone?

  Chapter One

  Rejection

“We did it, V,” Demetri said with a relieved sigh as they walked out of the doors of their last class of the cycle. They had just completed their general education. They spent the past forty cycles of their existence at the Bloodris Institution of Education for Young royals learning science, math, literature, history, etiquette, and vampiric control. Next cycle they would be required to specialize, choose something to dedicate the rest of their lives to, no pressure. The time of being a fledgling had finally passed, Valeria and her twin would be eighty next cycles and beginning their journey to the real world. No more hanging around other prestigious royal vampires who couldn’t see past their ambitions, she would get to choose what she learned and where she learned it at. The only problem was that Valeria didn’t know what that was yet. Her older sister, Emalia had chosen healing and was now a Healer at the GSI in Kalissa, the capital of Neutral Territory where she lived with her mate, Callan. Her sister’s mate was the Second Lieutenant of team A at the GSI. Valeria and the rest their family resided in Vampire Territory or VT. Maybe she could do something in Kalissa and live with her sister. Valeria missed her terribly, living at home with her two brothers and parents wasn’t exactly straightforward. Between Demetri’s penchant for pranks and Henrik’s constant need for attention, it was a personal torment.

“And I have no idea what I’m going to do,” Demetri said voicing the very thing Valeria had been thinking about herself. Her twin was a perfect mesh of their parent’s looks. The sharp cheekbones of their mother, the strong jawline of their father, his looks and beautiful words made all their classmates swoon. He had dark raven colored hair that touched the tips of his pointed ears, he stood at least a head taller than Valeria, and his broad shoulders resembled that of their father. No one could tell they were twins by looks alone; the only thing they shared was their mother’s blood red shimmering eyes that only a Dracul could have. Valeria had light blonde hair, slender curves, and delicate features.

“V! Metri! Wait for me!” A familiar whimsical voice called from behind them and sure enough, their youngest sibling, Henrik, was running at them his curly hair bouncing as he went. In a mere second, their younger brother had crashed into them, still unable to control his vampiric speed. Henrik was a carbon copy of their father minus the raven hair, that came from their mother. He had a sweetness about his face that just screamed ‘Look at me, I’m so cute.’ The youngest Dracul was a kind, open-hearted twenty-four-cycle-old fledgling who had a knack for all things books. He would most likely follow in the footsteps of their father and specialize in literature. To any human, he would have appeared as a six-cycle-old boy. In this dimension, beasts aged much slower than their human counterparts, for every twenty cycles a beast would age five cycles. Meaning an average beast would only live for one thousand cycles. Royals, on the other hand, lived until they were killed.

“How was your tour of the school, Henrik?” Demetri asked, throwing an arm around the younger boy a fond smile on his lips. Valeria watched on in mild jealousy, despite being twins the two of them hadn’t been close in a long time. She couldn’t remember the last time their conversations didn’t end in an argument.

“It was really fun! Blue even put me on her shoulders,” Henrik beamed at his siblings, his two little fangs peaking out, “I can’t wait to tell Mom.”

Blue was her little brother’s babysi
tter; she was a phoenix with blue hair whose name was not actually Blue. Although Valeria wasn’t sure what her real name was, she never spoke to her and was always absent when she was around.

“That’s great,” Demetri responded ruffling the black curls causing Henrik to giggle and grab at Demetri’s hair which was way out of his reach.

“Anyway, Demetri we have that appointment with the Elders in twenty minutes. Tonight we find out whether or not we got into the Dragon Core,” Valeria cut in eager to refocus the conversation on the upcoming meeting. A few phases back Valeria, and her twin had applied to a summer program at the Dragon Core where they go up north to find their dragon companion. Dragons were a common pet for vampires and even more so within royal ones. Every species of beast could have a companion, but it was only standard for vampires and sorcerers to adopt one although sorcerers called them familiars instead of companions like vampires. Valeria had always wanted a companion after cycles of watching her parents with theirs. Dragons like all magical creatures, could shrink and grow as they saw fit making them great pets and partners in a fight. However, dragons were the only ones that were picky about their owners. Only if a dragon deemed one worthy did they allow them to bleed on their egg but to get to meet the dragon they had to impress the Elders first, which is what Valeria and Demetri had spent the last cycle preparing for. Endless hours spent studying and researching in preparation for the tests the Elder’s gave them every phase.

“Mom said she would pick us up after,” Henrik said, always able to quickly adapt to any topic, a gift he’d inherited from their father, “She said we could all ride Nebby home!”

Nebby was their mother’s dragon companion. As he said this, they approached the Hall of Old Blood; it was a council chamber where the Elder’s would speak to individual students who wished to pursue an ancient practice. Tonight would be the night Valeria and Demetri got an answer.

“I’m kinda nervous,” Valeria murmured, looking up at the stone building. It was a tall grey building that had carvings of dragons, basilisks, and past vampire warriors along the arch of the double wooden doors. Everything in VT was carved with elegant shapes and dramatic figures. Every building held elegant arches holding stained glass windows. The cities in VT were known to be the cleanest cities in the world; even the vegetation grew in an orderly fashion.

“Well if you don’t get in you can always spend the summer helping Dad organize the library,” Demetri remarked, a teasing smirk across his lips and Valeria glared at him.

“What’s so bad about helping Dad organize the library?” Henrik asked confusion etched into his youthful features, “I think it sounds like fun.”

“You think anything that has to do with Mom and Dad is fun,” Valeria scoffed, sending an irritated glance at her brother who pouted in response.

“Not that there’s anything wrong with that,” Demetri snapped glaring at his sister always so quick to defend their little brother, “V is just jealous that you still find joy in the world.”

Valeria rolled her eyes before she pushed opened the massive doors and entered the Hall. The foyer was a spacious room that could fit a full-size dragon within it with white marble floors and walls with various old paintings of past battles, Old Vampiric was written across all the walls. From this point on in the building, Vampiric was the only language spoken despite the common tongue in Beastmora being Beastin. The room was circular with various halls with doors on either side of them, at the center of the large room stood a desk holding a bored looking woman with brown hair and maroon eyes, she wasn’t a royal from what Valeria could tell. The vampire’s eyes didn’t shine the way royals do.

“Ah, Duchess and Dukes Dracul please do come in,” The secretary said in the smooth tones of Vampiric, sounding like she was happy to have something to do, “I’ll go and let them know you are here. Can I get anything for your highnesses?”

“Your communicator information would be great actually,” Demetri flirted causing the secretary to blush at his advances, every beast did. Male or female, Demetri charmed them all with his good looks and flirtatious words.

“I’ll take a glass of wolf A-three blood please,” Valeria butted in with a smile before turning to Henrik with a questioning gaze, “Henrik, do you want one?”

“If you have any,” Henrik added with a smile at her, “Thank you for offering.”

The woman turned her gaze to Henrik her eyes softening at the fledgling and nodded before summoning a fairy.

“You may take a seat while you wait,” She said gesturing to the red leather bound couches along the wall, they reminded Valeria of the furniture she had seen in the Palace the last time she went. The trio of siblings had barely made it to their seats when the secretary called Demetri back to the Elders.

“Wish me luck Sibs,” Demetri said rising from his seat with the usual smirk present on his face.

“Good luck, Metri!” Henrik shouted, giving the older vampire a thumbs up. Valeria didn’t say anything but gave her twin an encouraging smile. Once he was out of sight, the nerves began to set in, but before she could dwell on it, Demetri re-emerged with a triumphant smile and a piece of parchment that had the Elder’s seal of approval on it.

“Congratulations! I knew you could do it,” Henrik cheered jumping into their brother’s arms who caught the young vampire easily.

“Thanks squirt,” Demetri laughed turning to Valeria opening his mouth to speak, but before he could the secretary called Valeria back. With a nervous smile, she stood to follow the female vampire leaving her brothers behind. Valeria fiddled with the locket she always wore; she couldn’t remember a time when she didn’t have the necklace around her neck and it never failed to relax her. Her mother had given it to her when she was only a baby. On the top of the locket was a combination of her mother’s family, crest and her fathers, The Draculs and the Greys.

The secretary led Valeria down a long stretch of the hall to another wooden door which she figured led into the council chambers. The walk took a minute or two, but it felt like hours, her nerves making time stretch. The woman gave her an encouraging smile before leaving her by the entrance to face judgment. Valeria took a second to compose herself before pushing open the large door and entering the council chamber. There was a single chair in the middle of the room surrounded by a roundtable that all the Elder’s sat around, if not for their old eyes, the vampire’s sitting around the table appeared to be no more than a century. Their faces were frozen at the moment they stopped aging, the wonderful thing about stopping ages was that their faces would never shrivel. The Head Elder, a woman with honey blonde hair and pointed features, gestured to the chair in the center which Valeria gladly took.

“Dutchess Valeria Tatiana Dracul,” The woman began her voice seemed loud in the otherwise quiet room, “After much deliberation and careful examination of not only your tests results but your personality evaluation, we have come to a conclusion. We have decided that you are not yet ready to pursue a companion.”

“What… What? Why?” Valeria asked her eyes wide in disbelief; the woman seemed irked by the lack of formality in her voice despite the fact that Valeria herself was higher ranked than everyone in the room.

“You are unfit to make this journey. We have come to the realization that you are irresponsible, impulsive, and immature. If you wish to add any additional comments, please do so now,” The ancient eyes stared at her with an expectant expression, but Valeria could not speak through her shock. “Very well. Dutchess Valeria Tatiana Dracul, your Dragon Core application has been denied. You may apply again next cycle.”

With that, the application on the Elder’s desk flew to Valeria’s hand with the rejection seal on it.

“Thank you for your time and consideration,” Valeria managed to blurt out as she rose from the chair and quickly exited the chamber. She was quiet when she reached her siblings, stuck in a daze of shock and by the look on her face, they knew as well.

  “Damn… Sorry V,” Demetri soothed, g
iving her a sympathetic look, “You can always apply next cycle.”

“It’s not the same,” She argued, “I passed all the tests, they just hate my personality. I can’t change who I am in a cycle.”

“Well, Emalia changed a lot in the cycle before she specialized! She could barely keep a conversation with anyone outside of us, and now she can, so you can change too! Dad says every setback is just a learning experience!” Henrik exclaimed with a smile in an attempt to make his sister feel better.

“Not a great example, fledgling. Em still lacks in the social department,” Demetri commented causing Valeria’s frown to deepen.

“Great so I’m going to be a socially awkward wolf with no friends?” Valeria lamented,” Sounds like the dream.”

“No, you’ll be a socially awkward vampire with no friends and no future,” Demetri teased, and Valeria scoffed at him.

“Suck an egg,” Valeria retorted hissing in warning at her twin.

“At least I’ll have an abundance of eggs to choose from…. Dragon eggs that is,” Demetri smirked, his eyes alight with mischief before the silver communicator strapped to his wrist lit up, communicators were magically powered devices that drew power from the magical currents running through the planet. He lifted his wrist to his face, the projected light blue screen that popped up read a message from their mother, alerting them she was outside. Henrik smiled widely at the mention of their mother, and the three of them shuffled out.

“Mom!” Henrik called, grinning as he ran towards her then just like before lost control of his speed and he slammed into her.

“Oof, Darling you’ve got to get that under control,” Her mother cupped Henrik’s face with a grimace across her red lips. Florence Dracul was beautiful. She had pale, white skin and dark black hair wound tightly into a bun that revealed her pointed ears. Her mother was the kind of beautiful that artists and poets dedicate their work to, the kind you’d go to war for, a beauty Valeria envied. Florence was the perfect example of a royal vampire, pale skin, pointed ears, and shimmering red eyes. Behind her was her dragon companion, Nebby, she was a fierce looking acid dragon with crimson scales that glimmered in the moonlight. Right now, Nebby was grown to full size and was watching them with a bored expression. Nebby was always aloof to anyone that was not her mother. She would always shrink down and rest on Florence’s neck to glare down at everybody who crossed her path.
