“Nonsense, we live in the same house now. Plus, it’s your wedding day. They cover three of the bases. Something old, something borrowed, and something blue. And this, will cover something new.” She says and hands me a sapphire encrusted hair comb. “That hunk Abir took me out to buy it while you were at the doctor yesterday.”

Today is my wedding day. It’s been three months since Prince Syed proposed, and he refused to wait any longer. He moved my Nana here to live with us within days of me accepting his marriage proposal. The doctors say the dry heat is good for her health, and I’m glad to have her with me. I don’t know if I could have stayed in Najadin without my Nana.

I was at the doctor yesterday because I have a surprise for the Prince. He’s going to be a father. I don’t know if it’s a boy or girl yet, but if it’s a girl, we’ll just keep going until he has the male heir he needs. I’d give him a thousand babies if I could.

The music starts to play, and I scramble to finish putting on the earrings. Nana is going to walk me down the aisle, and the Prince has allowed me to plan a traditional American wedding. The only difference is it’s being held in the main courtyard of our compound. The palm trees are decorated with white silk, and there are bouquets of jasmine everywhere. It looks beautiful, and it smells amazing.

As I walk down the aisle towards my future husband, my belly is full of butterflies all over again. Today I feel like the luckiest woman alive.

  Two Years Later

“I hate you!” I scream out and my husband, the Prince, just laughs at me.

“You didn’t hate me when we were making this baby.” He smiles and winks at me.

“Well I hate you now.” I say, and he squeezes my hand as my contraction subsides.

This is a joyous day for the Prince and me. Our first son will be making his debut. His big sister, the princess, is just over a year old. We’ve had our children very close, but it was necessary.

The Prince needed a male heir to secure his reign, and today he’ll have one. Just as soon as I can push again.

“Oh my gosh.” Prince Syed exclaims as his son’s cries resound through the room. “A strong boy! You’ve done so well, my love.” He says and kisses my forehead.

As I take the baby, he hurries out into the hall to get our daughter, Amelia. “Amelia, my sunshine, come meet your brother.” He says and our baby girl runs to him squealing with delight.

You would think my husband would have been disappointed when our first child wasn’t a boy, but nothing could be further from the truth. Amelia really is his sunshine, and he spoils her even more than he spoils me. He picks her up into his arms and swings her around as she laughs and grabs his cheeks.

I look at my husband and daughter while our new baby boy nuzzles against my chest. I have everything I’ve ever wanted, and the feeling is even more complete when my Nana walks through the door to meet her new great grandson.

  Fairy tales do come true.
