By Honey Harper
As Mandy closed the door behind her, she kicked off her shoes and leaned back against the wall, closing her eyes. She needed a shower, but all she really wanted was to get off her poor, aching feet. She wasn’t sure the extra holiday pay was worth braving the hectic crowds, considering she had just finished a ten-hour shift with one fifteen-minute break. But she had no choice.
Two of the other girls who worked at the premier toy store in the mall had quit two weeks ago, leaving them short-handed for the big Christmas rush, and Mandy had been given the option of working or being replaced with seasonal help. After all, there were plenty of young kids looking for jobs.
Reluctantly, Mandy had told her family she couldn’t join them on their vacation, and they’d been supportive. Her younger brother had teased her but quietly told her later he wished she could come. Her mother had been proud of her for making the responsible choice, since she needed this job to pay her way through college. And her stepfather, Neil, had given her the cash he’d planned to offer her to spend on the trip to the Cayman Islands so she could enjoy herself at home instead.
Ever the responsible daughter, Mandy stuck the cash in her bank account, keeping out only a few dollars to buy herself some snacks and soda to enjoy at night while she watched television. And that was exactly what she planned to do tonight. Her whole body ached and sagged heavily, and she decided to soak in a bubble bath until her muscles felt a little less offended by the amount of work they’d had to do over the past three days.
The bath was heavenly, and she wrapped herself in a huge plush towel as she walked down the hall toward her room. She really wasn’t in the mood to get dressed, and what did it matter? She would be home alone for another week, so it’s not like she had to hide from anyone. With a smile, she pulled on a pair of panties and reached into her bottom drawer, pulling out one of the old, super-sized t-shirts that was old and soft after years of washing and wearing.
She turned up the heat a couple of degrees so she wasn’t chilly and headed down to the kitchen. In a couple of bowls, she poured out some of the chips and candy she’d gotten, and she took a soda and some dip out of the fridge. Tossing it all on a tray, Mandy carried it to the coffee table and proceeded to lie back on the couch with the remote in hand.
She sighed in contentment at the completely relaxing position, and she moved only to quickly turn off the overhead light and flip on the lamp behind her. There was no reason to burn so much electricity when she was the only one here, but she didn’t feel comfortable in a completely dark house, either. Mandy was coming up on her nineteenth birthday in just a few months, but that didn’t mean she didn’t have her unjustified fears.
After all, she’d lost her father in a home burglary. Her mother had still been pregnant with her brother, and Mandy had heard the crash downstairs just before her mother came to collect her and shuffle them onto the balcony of their little house, then down the trellis to the neighbor’s house to call the police. She’d asked where her father was, and her mother told her he had gone to try to stop the invader.
But the gunshots rang out before the neighbor answered the door, and at the tender age of four, Mandy’s father was gone. The man who had broken in was in prison, but that didn’t mean Mandy couldn’t fathom something like that happening again, even though they lived in a much nicer neighborhood now with a full security system. Her mother and Neil had bought this house together, right after they married, and Mandy had lived here for about thirteen years.
Neil was a great stepfather, and her brother, Matt, knew no other father. He called Neil ‘Dad’, and while Mandy had never gotten comfortable with that, she thought it was appropriate coming from Matt. They were a family, and this house was very much her home. In fact, she couldn’t imagine going away to college and leaving this house behind, which was why she’d opted to go to school locally.
She sighed, wishing she was on the sandy, sunny beach with all of them right now.
Finally finding something she wanted to watch, Mandy snuggled deeper into the couch, her head resting on one arm and her left leg thrown up over the other, her right knee bent so she could rest her foot on the coffee table without disturbing the snacks. She loved stretching out like this and rarely had this sort of opportunity.
Mandy munched and laughed at the sitcom reruns, the house growing darker as the sun slipped away, and she was so enthralled in her private little heaven she didn’t hear the front door open, nor the footsteps over the thick carpeting. But something made her spine tingle, and as she turned her head and caught sight of a male figure standing just feet from her in the dim light, she jumped and let out a screech.
It took her a moment to realize that the silent figure was her step-uncle, Brandon, and she laughed at her fright. “Come on, Brandon, you could have said something so I wouldn’t jump out of my skin.”
Still, he just stared, and Mandy’s cheeks pinked when she realized he was focused on her state of undress. She should have been mortified, but there had always been something about Brandon that made her feel warm and fuzzy inside. She’d had a crush on him since her mother had started dating Neil. Mandy had been five, and Brandon was more than old enough to be her father, Neil’s older brother, but he was drop-dead gorgeous. Close to fifty, his dark hair was just starting to gray around the temples, and he was in excellent shape, spending hours a week at the gym to keep fit.
He shook his head and shed his leather jacket, tossing it in an armchair. “Sorry, Mandy, I didn’t mean to creep up on you. I just wasn’t expecting to see you here…like this.” His eyes ran over her body again, and she could almost feel the heat in them as they moved. It made her want to squirm under his scrutiny. Clearing his throat and turning to stare at the television, he asked, “Where’s your stepdad? I saw his car in the garage.”
Mandy blinked in surprise. “I thought you knew they were going on vacation.” But he looked blindsided by the news. Muting the television and sitting up, she told him, “I was supposed to go, too, but I got screwed into working through the holidays. Come on, Brandon, I know we told you about the trip to the Cayman Islands. It’s been planned for months.”
He smacked himself in the forehead. “I completely forgot about it! I’ve had so much on my mind lately.” The, he frowned at her. “So, you
re staying here by yourself? That sort of sucks.”
She agreed. Honestly, the fact that Brandon was an eternal bachelor and spoke like guys half his age rather than being all stuffy like most older men was half of the reason she found him so attractive. “It’s not really a big deal. I mean, I’m an adult. It’s not like I’m some scared little girl who can’t take care of herself.”
His eyes sparked again, and the way he looked at her this time made something low in her belly heat up and start to churn. His lips parted slightly, and Mandy really wanted to know what he was thinking as he locked eyes with her. In a gravelly voice, he said, “You are all grown up, aren’t you? I’ve known you for so long, sometimes I forget.”
She laughed nervously. “What did you expect? Was I supposed to stay six years old for the rest of my life?” She stood. “Have a seat. I’ll be right back, and I’ll make you some dinner.” Mandy figured she should at least pull on a pair of shorts or some jeans. For all that she could fantasize about what Brandon looked like undressed all day, she had her modesty, and she wasn’t exactly comfortable at this point.
But Brandon grabbed her arm, stopping her. She looked at him in surprise and a bit of trepidation, but he smiled. “You don’t have to cover yourself for my benefit. I sort of like the view.”
She blushed fiercely, her throat and cheeks heating to vicious magnitude. “I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable.” And by anyone, she meant herself. She wasn’t usually so shy, but considering she was still a virgin, no male had actually seen her like this, and something about Brandon made her especially nervous. She could barely glance at him without thinking wayward thoughts, and he had a similar expression when he looked at her now.
It was a dangerous situation.
He took a step forward, bringing them even closer together, and the scent of his cologne was heady, and Mandy had to bite her lip to keep from sighing at the pleasure of simply smelling Brandon. She suddenly wished she’d sprayed some perfume or something.
“I’m not the least bit uncomfortable looking at you this way, Mandy. Do you even know how beautiful you are?” He loosened his grip, brushing his fingers gently up and down her arm. Mandy held her breath, goose-bumps forming on her skin, and she tensed, fisting her hands at her sides. All she wanted to do right now was reach out and touch Brandon, with the same tenderness he used on her. But that would be completely inappropriate.
Still, she stood there, unmoving, waiting to see what would happen. She thought he would let go, laugh, and tell her to get upstairs and cover herself. But she was wrong. He reached for her other arm, clasping her hand in his, and faced her toward him. “You really don’t give yourself credit, Mandy. Your hair is like pure silk, and your skin is absolutely flawless. You’re petite and thin with curves in all the right places. Who wouldn’t want to stare at as much of you as they could possibly lay eyes on?”
His words warmed her, and she ducked her head with a smile. The admiration wasn’t typical; she didn’t really date much, mostly because high school students tended to be immature beyond belief, and guys really only wanted to get in her pants. They had no idea what love and relationships were all about, and if Mandy planned to get involved with someone, she wanted it to be for love, not just for sex.
It’s why she’d promised herself and held to her promise that she wouldn’t give up her innocence until she was married. Unless someone truly wanted to invest in her long term and was willing to prove it, she had no intention of sleeping with them. She didn’t have regrets in her life, and she wasn’t going to do anything to cause her to have regrets in the future. Giving her virginity to someone she didn’t intend to spend the rest of her life with would definitely be a huge regret.
But as she stood there, eyes locked with Brandon’s, she questioned her strict morals. She’d wanted him to notice her for so long, just to give her the satisfaction of knowing that she was somebody, that she could attract a grown man with life experience who wasn’t all about sex.
Brandon’s hand cupped her cheek, and he gazed at her in wonder. She gulped and didn’t realize what was happening until his lips touched hers. She gasped at the unexpected contact, but almost immediately, her body relaxed and she leaned into him, her chest brushing against his. And that only seemed to encourage him, his hands spreading over both sides of her face and tilting her head so he could deepen the kiss.
Mandy parted her lips at the urging of his tongue, and she moaned as he danced and teased over every inch of her mouth. It made her legs weak, her lungs ache, and her stomach churn with warmth that spilled over, lower in her body. Her hands twitched as she reached for him, and she threaded her fingers through the hair at the back of his neck tentatively, holding him locked with her because she couldn’t stand the thought of breaking away right now.
When he did pull away, the separation was so sudden it sent Mandy reeling. “Did I do something wrong?” she asked in a breathless voice.
Brandon shook his head, standing back from her, out of arm’s reach. He wouldn’t meet her eyes, and Mandy felt tears well up in her eyes. She wanted him to say something, anything, but he didn’t speak. She stood there, feeling like a complete idiot for giving into a desire she should never have felt, but unable to move for fear of creating an awkward situation for them in the future. She had to do something, whether that meant apologizing or something else, to avoid tension. Her family would pick up on that, and she didn’t want to put either of them in such a position.
“Brandon, I…”
He held up a hand to stop her, and she fought a sob. He took a step toward her and raised his head to meet her gaze. He swallowed visibly before speaking, and his voice was still raspy. “Mandy, I don’t think you realize what you just stepped into. It’s no game, and it’s dangerous. I want you, with every ounce of my being. I’ve watched you grow, and I know I love the person you’ve become. But I never thought I’d feel this toward you.”
Biting her lip, Mandy considered what to say, how to handle this. There were so many things that didn’t fit, and she felt as though she shouldn’t even be thinking this over. What she should do was go upstairs, get dressed, and return things to the friendly, teasing relationship they’d had for so many years. Brandon was her stepfather’s brother, and even though they weren’t related, it still made him Mandy’s uncle. And he was so much older than her. She knew the stigma around relationships with that sort of age separation.
And even without those factors, she had made a vow not to give her virginity away until her wedding night. Anyone who loved her enough to marry her would love her enough to respect her wish to wait.
But she’d never had these kinds of feelings stirred within her. At this point, she wanted to beg Brandon to touch her again. She wanted to taste him again, so she could really appreciate just how decadent his kiss was. Everyone claimed that, when you met the right one, there was a spark, a feeling of emptiness that only that one person could fill, and that’s how she felt right now. She needed him. The urge was so strong she almost threw herself into his arms.
No, this definitely wasn’t a game, and if she made the wrong decision, it could be very dangerous. But as she stared at Brandon, thinking of all the times she’d longed for someone like him to notice her, to have an older, mature, handsome man with an edge just like him to kiss her with the passion he’d just shown, she couldn’t believe the feelings inside her were wrong.
This was the moment. With such a strong chemistry between them, Mandy knew in her heart that she wouldn’t regret breaking her vow. It had been a pipe dream anyway, she realized, and the expression Brandon wore now convinced her that he genuinely cared for her and wouldn’t make her regret her decision.
She stretched out her hand to him, and he looked down at it with a curious expression, finally linking fingers with her. She pulled his hand to her chest and laid it on her breast, hissing in a breath at the contact, a touch she’d never allowed anyone before. Dropping her own hand, she stood there in wonder as he cares
sed her, gently molding her breast and massaging it through the thin, worn cotton. Her invitation seemed to be enough, and he closed his other hand low on her hip.
The warm moisture slipping out of her between her thighs was foreign, and the sensation was odd and exciting. As Brandon moved closer and pulled her against him, she marveled at it, as well as the bulge in his pants that pressed into her stomach and made her head spin. He kissed her again, this time more fiercely, and she became enthralled in the intimacy, feeling like her whole body and soul were encased in his.
When his fingers slipped under her shirt, crawling over the skin of her stomach and up to her other breast, she was shocked, more by the fact that his touch was warm when she expected the tips of his fingers to chill her. She drew her own nails over the small amount of chest that was exposed above his V-neck collar, reveling in the way he shivered and moaned into her mouth as she did. Feeling driven by his reaction, she reached for the hem of his shirt and tugged up on it, until he pulled away from the kiss and raised his arms so she could yank it over his head.
He was on her again instantly, the heat of his chest radiating into her as she felt the muscles in his back with her palms, the way they moved and shifted as his hands grew more courageous in the exploration of her body. She embraced his touch, throwing her head back as he gripped the back of her thighs and lifted her so she could wrap her legs around his waist. His arousal pressed against intimate places, and she panted at that contact. It was the most satisfying and yet most frustrating sensation she’d ever felt.
In his arms this way, Mandy could look into his eyes without having to strain her neck upward, and she could see lasers of heat pouring from them. “I can’t believe how good you feel,” she told him, instinctively rocking her hips ever so slightly to rub the length of him against her.
