  PROLOGUE

  Her world hadn’t been the same since her mother died, when Siofra was fifteen. So many lies had been unearthed in her life since then. She has been uncertain of what her path in life should be ever since.

  Siofra O’Hana went through the motions though; even walking faithfully down the aisle in the summer of 2006, in that God-awful peach and green frill monster of a dress her soon-to-be step-mother had picked out for her special day, when her father remarried. Her world turned into a tornado again at the reception when she found out that her pack was on the brink of war with the Niagara Pack.

  You see, Siofra is a half-breed; half human and half werewolf, born out of an affair which her mother Cecilia, a full blooded wolf, had with a mysterious man named Shamus, whom Siofra has never met. Cecilia O’Hana had been suffering a severe bout with depression when she had abandoned her three older sons and husband and fled to Boston to stay with her sister. While there, she had according to Siofra’s Aunt Becky, met a charming, handsome and irresistible Scottish man. Siofra, playfully nicknamed Fry by all her family and friends, had only discovered this after her mother’s untimely death, in a car accident in the winter of 2004. It wrecked her world for a little while; being a teen and having just lost her mother.

  Her entire life she thought she had been the daughter of Marcus O’Hana, Alpha of the Clover Pack of Buffalo; but she had been wrong. She should’ve known something was up; she hadn’t shifted on the moon after her sixteenth birthday, like Werewolves do. She had incredible speed, sense of smell, impeccable eyesight and strength, but no wolf form. She also has a special talent which only her father, mother and brothers know about; she is telepathic. She can read people’s minds and talk to them through hers, without anyone else knowing.

  Her wolf is always present, deep inside her soul; she can sense it. It is like talking to an entirely different person, only inside her own head. Her wolf is all white with blue eyes that seem to cut into her soul when they talk. It is always at the edge of her mind, pacing, lying down, and ready to help when needed. When she becomes angry, the wolf will stand at attention and Siofra’s eyes begin to glow, turning ice blue, warning those around her to back off, but no transformation follows.

  The reception for her father and step-mother’s wedding, in the summer of 2006, was only a sliver of shock in her now unraveling world. The disagreements between the Clover Pack of Buffalo and the Niagara Pack of Niagara Falls have led nowhere. Now 6 years later, in the summer of 2012, Siofra wonders where it all went wrong, as she sits in the waiting room of Mercy Hospital in South Buffalo.

  “God, I hope everyone is going to be okay,” mumbles her sister-in-law Moira, her oldest brother Marcus Jr.’s wife. A lot of her Pack have been injured at a gathering in a local park when they were ambushed by the Niagara Pack’s warriors. “Have you heard anything about Kyle?”

  “No, not since we arrived and the EMT’s rushed him past, yelling out info,” she shakes her head, mindlessly keeping up a fast pace, back and forth, over the laminate floor.

  Kyle Bokan is Siofra’s longtime boyfriend. They have been inseparable ever since they were little. He accepts her for her. Although they are not true mates, they still love each other unconditionally. True mates are something only a special few of the supernatural world get to experience; because, lets face it, in a world of millions of people, what are the odds of you running into the person, or supe, made for you?

  She is so wracked with worry she hasn’t noticed that she is still wearing the shirt covered in Kyle’s blood and that of his brother. She had been so happy this morning, talking over her and Kyle’s future together because they had just found out she is pregnant. She prayed to herself, ‘Please let him be okay, I can’t do this on my own.’

  Everyone who wasn’t injured in the fight, is in the waiting room, wanting to hear about their fallen brethren. Nancy, her stepmother, is looking pompous as usual; it is already known that her husband is going to be okay with only a broken arm and minor scrapes. Siofra’s older brothers, Marcus Jr., Duncan and Sean are also going to be just fine with minor injuries.

  Kyle and his brother, Kevin Jr., however had taken a bigger punishment, as they were the first line of defense. Wrong place, wrong time seemed to be the notion. Fry knows better than that; Kyle pushed her out of the way when the attack came, protecting her. If he dies, it is because he had been trying to save her.

  She tries not to think about it. She closes her eyes to try and fight the tears and all she sees are Kyle’s stormy eyes and his smiling face, as they sat hip to hip on the picnic table bench. “I love you baby,” he had whispered in her ear only seconds before the Niagara Pack ambushed them through the trees, the tone of his voice resonates in her mind. The feeling of love, the unspoken promise of forever, and the family that is growing within her, squeezes around her heart. She tries to hold in the sob as she places her hand on her stomach, but she is flooded with emotion.

  The Bokan parents, Kevin and Shelley, are the first to see the surgeons walking towards them. “Oh God, Fry, here they come,” Shelley whimpers, pointing behind Siofra.

  Fry swings around towards them as they walk up to her. She’s wringing her hands, praying frantically that they will give her the news she wants; the news that she desperately needs.

  “Are you Siofra O’Hana?” One of them asks and she blankly
nods her head. “And Mr. and Mrs. Bokan?” He looks around her, where Kevin and Shelley stand.

  “I’m so sorry to inform you of this folks, but Kyle and Junior have passed. We did all we could.” The one surgeon puts his hand on Siofra’s shoulder, but she is numb.

  Her world is spinning and her legs became weak. The last thing she feels is leaning into the plastic fern that had been her focal point all this time; then everything goes black.

  CHAPTER ONE:

  “It’s been two months, Marcus. She should’ve picked herself up by now, and started moving on,” Siofra can hear her stepmother, Nancy, say from downstairs. She is packing up the last of her little knick knack stuff in her bedroom, the one she’s slept in since she was five; all while her father and Nancy are packing her some food and drinks, in a cooler, for her trip. “She’s a foolish girl to be leaving now, pregnant as she is. She should stay here, be with her family.”

  “She’s leaving Nance, there’s no changing her mind. It would be different if her brothers were still living here, but she feels as if she’s alone now with Kyle gone.” She can see Marcus Sr. outside now, through her window; he is packing the cooler into the backseat of the hand-me-down 1970 Chevy Chevelle he had given her when she stated there is no keeping her here. The car is in perfect condition, it had been her father’s project since she was little, and now it is hers.

  “Besides, Nance, you haven’t been all too welcoming either! All the criticism you’ve been passing since she told us she’s gonna keep the baby, I’m surprised she’s stayed this long.” He slams the door shut and turns back to the house.

  Siofra zips up her little duffel bag that has her last odds and ends, and heads out of the room. She stops at the door, turns to face her childhood room once more and leans on the door jam, taking a deep breath in. She takes one last look at the pink and purple flowered wallpaper that she had helped her mom put up when she was 8, the little silver vanity that her father had helped her put together when she was 10, the softball trophies she earned in high school, and, finally, her eyes fall to the far corner of the room.

  There sits a floor to ceiling, hand painted mural of a winter scene, complete with whitetail deer and pine trees, mountains in the distance and a log cabin with smoke coming out of the chimney. It had taken Kyle and her two weeks to paint that when they were both 16; all of their after school time and weekends spent laughing and flicking paint at each-other. Her smile is fleeting, as his laugh rolls through her memory, then, the feel of his lips on hers when he would sneak in a kiss, hoping her father wouldn’t catch them.

  Siofra will never forget those grey eyes of his. They were like storm clouds rolling in off of Lake Erie. The kind of clouds that carry lightning and torrential downpours. In his wolf form, they would turn a stunning red, one of his family’s hereditary traits.

  His auburn hair would glint in the summer sun when they spent their summer vacations on a farm in Central New York. Kyle’s laugh would echo through the woods as he chased her, eventually wrapping his arms around her waist and dragging her to the forest floor, kissing her for what seemed like hours. His smile would be from ear to ear, with a dimple in his left cheek.

  ‘How could this happen!’ She screams in her head, pounding her fist into the door. ‘We were supposed to be happy! How could he just leave me like this?’

  “He didn’t just leave,” she breathes in, “he died. He had no say in the matter.”

  Taking one last, long look, she smiles sadly. Tapping her fingers on the door to her childhood room she fights back the tears, trying to ebb the squeezing of her heart telling her not to leave.

  “Goodbye Kyle,” she whispers while the tears freely fall down her cheeks. Her left arm goes around her belly, finding the little hard spot. She raises her right hand and wipes the tears away with her thumb. “I’ll never forget you.”

  ~~~~~
  Marcus Sr. stands with his arm around his daughter, outside, in front of the car that will take her away from Buffalo. Away from her home; away from him. His heart hurts for his daughter and all of the trouble in her young life. He wants her nearby, especially since she’ll be having a baby, but he knows she needs to find herself and to be free from the hurt. He silently prays that she’ll find whatever she is looking for out there.
  “You could stay here Fry, you know you can, hun.”
  “You know why I can’t dad,” she puts her arm around his lower back and swings around for a full hug. Glaring at her stepmother she sends her telepathy powers out and hears Nancy think, ‘Hurry up, leave already. I’ve got plans to make your room into a tea room.’ Siofra stifles a gag at the insufferable woman.
  “I gotta stretch my own legs for once. Be my own woman, make a life for myself and the baby.” She releases him and looks him straight in his dark blue eyes. The same eyes that have watched her grow, cry and laugh. The same eyes that watched her hit the game winning homeruns and sink buzzer beating half-court shots. The love and sadness she sees there breaks her resilient shield into pieces and the tears well in her eyes.
  “Alright, well you know that the door will always be open no matter what,” he puts his hands on her shoulders to evaluate her one more time. “You call me every day, doesn’t matter what time! Email me too, and your brothers, but calls are preferred. You know how much I hate that computer. Your brothers need to know you’re taken care of, so don’t make them call me or come looking for you. ” He gives her that stern ‘Do what I tell you’ Alpha look.
  “I will, I will, I promise,” she smiles a sad little smile. She gives Nancy a quick polite nod and leans across the driver’s seat to place her purse on the passenger’s.
  “Think I’ve got everything. Wallet, phone, charger, and my laptop. All the bags are in the trunk and back seat. Alrighty then, off I go.” It is so hard for her to keep the heartbreak out of her voice. She hugs her father one last time and climbs in. With her heart pounding noisily in her ears, she starts the car up.
  Marcus Sr. leans his forearms on the open window, staring at his little girl. “The map of friendly Packs is in the glove compartment and programmed into your GPS. Just remember to visit the Alpha if you’re staying more than a couple of days, it’s only polite. I don’t need any angry phone calls.” Her father smiles slightly and straightens to his full height. She shakes her head with a little laugh.
  ‘Always the overprotective one,’ she thinks, giving him a wink.
  “Love you Dad,” she yells as she puts the 350 horsepower engine to good use, speeding out of the driveway and down the road that leads to the highway; and her new life. ‘This is for the best,’ her wolf growls in her mind, ‘we’ll be able to find HIM, our MATE.’
  “Yeah, whatever,” Siofra scoffs and heads southwest, towards Louisiana. She isn’t on this journey to find a mate, or hell, even a boyfriend. She wants to find herself and a place where she feels at home.
  CHAPTER TWO:
  “Damn this sleet shit. I’d rather have ten feet of snow!” Fry mumbles as she struggles to keep the car on the road and off the guardrail. The wind and freezing sleet pelt the highway, sending the Chevelle wiggling back and forth. “Why didn’t I stay in Denver with Sean?”
  ‘Because his wife is a total nut case and psycho bitch, that’s why!’ Mutters her wolf, who is as agitated with this drive as Fry is, pacing back and forth and issuing frustrated growl after growl every time the back end of the car fishtails. ‘She tried to drop us off at a home for un-wed mothers.’
  “I know, I know, she’s a crazy bitch. We won’t stay longer than a couple of days next time, promise!” She chuckles to herself, squinting out through the windshield as her wipers keep up a frantic pace.
  Her knuckles are as white as new fallen snow, as she grips the steering wheel. She has spent the last five months on the road and it is now a week before Thanksgiving. She is 7 months pregnant and her very round belly brushes up against the wheel, causing her to squirm. Her pregnancy has been somewhat easy, up till tonight, and she can’t see
m to sit quite right to get the baby to stop kicking.
  “Quiet down, little guy,” she coos to herself while running her hand over her belly. She tries to focus on something else to calm her nerves and she starts to recall the journey that brought her here.
  The first stop in her journey, she had gone to New Orleans to spend time with her mother’s college friend, Dorthea Petit, who is the female Alpha of the Pack in the French Quarter. Dorthea’s husband passed away a few years ago and she had assumed the leadership, as she had no sons. That visit had been an eye-opener for Siofra.
  She had come into contact with all sorts of supernatural beings when staying with Dorthea. Madame Petit, as Dorthea loves to be called, owns a popular nightclub on Bourbon Street called Lucian’s Place. It welcomes every super-natural creature, as long as they don’t cause trouble. The couple of times Fry went there she met more different kinds of supes than ever before living under the protective eye of her father in Buffalo.
  A vampire named Sebastian Campbell had danced with her well into the early morning hours one night and slept at the club that day for safety. His pale skin, impeccable manners, and stories of the past had captivated Siofra. She hadn’t laughed that much in a while and even now she giggles remembering his thick Cajun laden accent.
  She went to a tarot reading by Samuella Le’brou, a renowned local witch-doctor, and had been surprised to see the woman cast a few spells for other patrons. Ridding a woman of migraines with light beams shooting from her fingers, healing a human’s acne with just a wave of her hand, and concocting a ’love’ potion in a huge black cauldron had been fascinating to Siofra. On her way out the door Samuella had given Siofra a small wreath of dried herbs, telling her to hang it above her homes’ door, because it would keep her safe. She had it hanging from the rear-view mirror of her Chevelle for now, until she found her home.
