Chapter 1
Chris Campbell pressed a few buttons and the treadmill started to speed up. He picked up the pace to accommodate and settled into a hard run. His lungs were barely burning and his muscles were only just starting to hurt.
He was getting fitter. This he couldn’t have managed a couple of months ago.
The TV set up across from him started playing some commercials that had Chris growling and he pressed the remote, switching channels until the baseball came up. That he could handle. Athletics was more his sport but Chris could handle baseball, even if the camera didn’t stay still long enough for him to enjoy it.
There was sports and then there were sports. Chris’ choices were preferably a lot more adrenaline-inducing. It was a shame that the most popular sports in America didn’t give him that high.
Not like his job. That certainly gave him a high. Chris was confident and knew how to smooth-talk his way around people, even when they were the most dangerous individuals on the East Coast, but there was nothing like a high-stakes job. Would the cops show up? Would there be a disagreement about the shipment?
If some of his high-level police officer friends knew how he had really made his millions, Chris would have been put in jail a long time ago.
The television went onto more commercials. Growling, Chris reached for the remote again. But his fingers fumbled and he dropped it. In the midst of trying to catch it, Chris lost his rhythm and fell, barely missing his head on the treadmill console and landing on his side, trapping his arm between him and the track. Pain shot up his arm and Chris cried out as he shot off the treadmill and landed in a heap on the ground. His elbow hurt. Nothing seemed broken but the pain had him seeing stars.
“Shouldn’t you give it a rest for once?”
Chris opened his eyes and focused on the beautiful woman in the doorway to his personal gym. She was leaning against the wall, arms folded across her buxom chest with a small smile aimed in his direction. Chris felt his cock stirring and shifted so she couldn’t see how tight his shorts now were, sitting up with a scowl in her direction.
“Aren’t you supposed to run to my side and make sure I’m okay?” he snapped.
May Lucero laughed.
“With you? A bullet could bounce off your head and you’d still not let me take care of you.”
Chris had to concede that. He had been on his own since he was fifteen and hadn’t needed anyone to take care of him or take care of anyone. Not until this woman came into his life as his new personal assistant. May was a sweet woman who had a smile that tightened his chest and made his cock want to find something hot and wet between her legs. She was the most efficient person Chris had ever met, even more so than him.
May was a professional all the way. Even with her health problems, she came into work and gave it her all. Chris tried to be lenient when she was like that but May pushed him away. She was thinner than two years before when they had first met but she wasn’t any less beautiful. Chris could stare at her all day and never get bored.
Even when she drove him mad on his own rules. Chris moved over to a weight bench and eased himself up to sit.
“I need to keep in shape, May.” He grimaced as he prodded his elbow. “When you meet with some of those people who could turn on you within moments, you need to make sure you can fight back.”
“Even if it means injuring yourself?”
“I’m not injured.”
Chris flexed his arm and winced as his elbow screamed. May rolled her eyes and entered the room. Dressed in a black denim pinafore with a navy t-shirt and black leggings, May looked amazing. Chris was sure if she wore high-heeled boots instead of her black tennis shoes, she would be absolutely stunning. He had a thing for women in high heels.
Then again, May didn’t need them to get his attention.
May knelt before him and took his arm out in front of her, gently manipulating his arm about and massaging his elbow joint. Chris forgot about the pain as he watched May at work, casting his eyes over her sleek black hair tied back in a French plait, her smooth brown skin and her dark chocolate brown eyes. She smelled gorgeous.
Chris had to fight down his urges as his cock decided to have a mind of his own. May didn’t seem to notice as she lowered his arm.
“You’ve bruised it so it’ll need some ice. And no arm weights for a week.”
“A week?”
May laughed.
“Don’t worry, your muscles will still be there in a week. They’re not going to disappear.” May stood and went towards the door. “A bit of rest won’t do you any harm.”
Chris stood and followed her, almost like a dog. That was ridiculous. May was his employee. She was supposed to follow him, not the other way around. But this was May Lucero; Chris couldn’t say no.
They entered the kitchen and May got out the ice
tray, knocking the cubes into a tea towel. She wrapped the towel around the cubes and went to Chris, placing it on his elbow.
“Leave that there for a bit. Should ease the muscles if they’re bruised.”
“Yes, Mom.”
May stuck her tongue out at him and went back to tidying up. Chris could feel the ice starting to come through the tea towel and sat on one of his stools at the counter.
“I can’t rest.” He protested. “I don’t do rest.” Then he backtracked a little: “Not much, anyway.”
May laughed and rolled her eyes.
“Chris, all you practically do is play with a tiny bit of work. You spend a lot of time in the gym, more than in your office.”
“When I’ve got you around, I don’t need to be in my office all the time.” Chris purred.
May shook her head, still smiling.
“Very funny.” She put the ice tray away. “Speaking of your business, Anton Romanov called. He said he’s still on for tonight. That’s the place he wants to meet.”
“Good. I’ve been wanting to get this shipment off my hands for a while now.” Chris adjusted the towel on his elbow. “Having that amount in the container has been making me antsy.”
“Well, make it Romanov’s problem after tonight.”
“I plan to.”
Chris watched May as she wiped the surfaces down. He couldn’t help but marvel at her. She had been told up front about what her job was to be and who Chris actually was. Being the personal assistant to an arms dealer was most likely going to put her into trouble with the police. Chris gave her an out. But May had stepped up to the plate and hadn’t even batted an eyelid. She kept all his appointments, made sure all the money was available but could be moved around if needed and even did his laundry.
And she didn’t say a word. Chris didn’t know if he had found an angel or an undercover police officer gathering evidence.
“Does it bother you?” he asked.
“What?”
“That you work for an arms dealer. That I made my billions the wrong way.”
May looked up, her hand pausing with her cleaning. Then she sighed.
“I do disapprove. It’s not how I wanted to work.” Then she smiled as she put the cloth back in the sink and leant on the counter. “But you pay me well, I get enough vacation days and you helped me with my debts. If I’d stayed with my last job, my hospital bills would have put me in so much debt I’d be out on the streets.”
At least Chris knew he was useful for something. Money. But he couldn’t blame May. She was single, her brother the only family she was close to and close by, struggling with cancer. For most of her employment, May had been going to chemotherapy and even had an operation to remove some of the cancerous tissue.
Cancer was a bitch.
That was when Chris remembered. It was the day May was to find out if the cancer had spread or had gone completely. He silently hoped so; Chris didn’t think he would be able to cope with May around to keep him in check.
“When’s your appointment?” He asked, trying to sound innocent about it.
“One-thirty.” May looked at the clock. “It was ten-forty-two. Fingers crossed it’s good news.”
“I should hope so. It feels like you’ve been on chemo forever.”
A slight frown appeared between May’s eyes.
“I didn’t ask to get cancer.”
“I know you didn’t.” Chris looked at her thick hair, plaited nicely on her head. “At least you didn’t lose your hair.”
“Yeah.” May absently touched her ponytail. “I was lucky there.”
“I liked the older style.”
“The one where I had short hair and dyed my hair purple?”
“Yep. But this new look is good on you.” Chris smiled, putting a little extra charm in it. “Very good.”
May blinked. A blush started on her cheeks. Chris liked seeing her flustered.
“I…” May pushed off the counter and hurried past Chris, heading into the hall and towards the office. “I have a few more messages for you. Nothing out of the ordinary.”
Chris knew better than to push it. He liked to tease her and gently flirt but that was it.
He was really losing his touch if that was all he was doing with May.
Chris pushed off the stool and followed his personal assistant into his office. May was behind her desk, picking up her notepad. Were her hands trembling?
“What are they?” He asked, leaning against the door to watch her.
May swallowed.
“Three want you to contribute to their charities, four want your appearance at a charity function, your brother called demanding for money again and a few of your clients have put in extra orders.”
Chris sighed.
“Oh, great. You know what to do with them.”
“A decent-sized check for the charities and decline your appearance, put the orders into the computer and set the ball rolling. As for your brother…” May grinned. “Send him a ‘fuck you’ message.”
Chris laughed. That would serve Freddy right. He was a spoiled brat and thought he was entitled to Chris’ money because they were brothers. Their mother and father had tried to get Chris to hire Freddy and work very little for a big salary but Chris had put his foot down. His parents didn’t care about Chris, only his money, and they really wanted their golden child to have the money instead.
Chris had cut all of them out of his life a long time ago but Freddy just kept coming back. Sometimes his mother would call and leave a whining message. His father had the sense to back off.
If only his mother and brother had the same sense.
“Good girl.” Chris said approvingly. “You know me so well.”
May grinned.
“After three years, I should do.” She sat at her desk. “I’ll get onto that part first.”
Chris wasn’t surprised. Freddy had met May once about two weeks after May started her employ and he had made some crude, lewd and racist remarks towards her. May had been rattled when he started grabbing her and Chris had had to punch Freddy to get him away before throwing him out the house. That was the last time Chris had seen his brother.
It was startling that after such a short space of time he could be so protective over May.
Chris watched as her fingers flew across the keys on her keyboard, her eyes focused on her work. He had always found it amusing that May could type so fast on a computer but so slowly on her smart phone. She was even worse than he was in that respect.
“Do you want me to take you to the hospital?” He asked.
May looked up and blinked. Why was she so surprised at that? Then her surprise cleared and she gave him a smile.
“No, thanks. Sammie’s picking me up for lunch and then on to the hospital.”
“Oh.”
He shouldn’t have expected her to jump up and down and say yes with a squeal. But having her turn his offer down made Chris deflate a little. May arched an eyebrow at him.
“Problem?”
“No. No problem.” Chris coughed, aware that the ice was melting fast through the towel. “Take the rest of the day off if you want.”
“Come on, Chris, you need me here.”
“I’ll be fine. I’m quite capable of answering the phone and I’m going out to deal with the Romanovs anyway. There won’t be anything for you to do.”
“Really?”
Chris laughed. May was always so skeptical of his abilities beyond his job.
“I managed fine before you came along. Besides, if it’s bad news I’m sure you don’t want to be around me.”
May sighed.
“I hope it’s not bad news. I’ve been through the wringer, as it is.”
Chris knew about that. She had been leaving an abusive relationship when Chris gave her the job offer, she had fought cancer and looked as though she was winning and she had to have a job knowing her boss got his billions under the table.
And yet she was still here. May Lu
cero was here in his life. Chris didn’t know how he managed that but May was still about.
Two years and Chris still hadn’t made a move. May was too special for that, even Chris recognized it. She didn’t deserve something temporary. Her life involved commitment.
That was a commitment Chris couldn’t give her.
*****
“I can’t believe it.”
She was cancer-free. May had needed the doctor to tell her a couple of times before it finally sank in. There was no cancer now. The operation and the chemo had gotten rid of it. There were obviously going to be check-ups every six months but May was healthy again.
In remission.
“Neither can I.” Her friend Sammie Gonzales practically beamed from the driver’s seat. “And there we were going in expecting the worst.”
“That we were.” May stared out the window in front of her. “No more cancer. I feel like it’s all a dream.”
Sammie paused. Then she reached over and pinched May on the back of the arm. May flinched.
“Ouch! What was that for?”
“It was most certainly not a dream if you could feel that.”
May groaned.
“Thanks a bunch. Now I’m going to bruise.”
“Oh, don’t fuss so much.” Sammie opened the door. “Come on, I thought we were going to get a few things.”
May sighed and climbed out the car. They were at the nearby superstore, May remembering she didn’t have much in her cupboards and wanted to get a few things to celebrate. Somehow this felt less cumbersome now she had the remission news.
Sammie linked arms with her friend as they walked towards the front doors. They were opposite in practically everything. May was tall, black and beautiful while Sammie was five feet in heel, half-Mexican with frizzy black hair she kept in a messy ponytail. She wasn’t classically beautiful but she had a bright personality and a winning smile. Her glasses didn’t hide the warmth in her green eyes. May had found her high school friend a guardian angel since their freshman year, during her abusive relationship to Teddy, and her cancer issues. The woman had not batted an eyelid or walked the other way as many of her friends had done.
