  Prologue

  Finley

  5 years ago . . .

“Finley, can you go get the boards from outside and bring them in for me? I want to close up early to go listen to the local bands play,” my boss calls out from where he’s sanding one of the boards down.

“Yeah. No problem I’ll get it done,” I call out over my shoulder as I put down the book I’d been reading and head for the door.

Glancing across the boardwalk I spot a chick sitting by herself at the water’s edge. Probably some tourist. They’re always around here and make it difficult for us locals when the surf is good.

Ready to get out of here, I quickly do what I’ve gotta do. I wanna go listen to the locals play as well. I heard some of my friends talking earlier that ACE was playing tonight and I really wanna see them.

“Finley, are you done yet?” Cal calls out from the other side of the shop.

“Yeah, give me two minutes. I’m locking the cash up,” I reply back.

“Finley, c’mon, I don’t wanna be late!” His impatience forces me to roll my eyes.

Movement to the left of where I’m standing catches my attention as I ignore my boss’ arrogant tone. I have to see what’s going on. I spot her right away as she lifts herself up out of the sand and shakes her front off. Looks like she did a faceplant into the sand from the way she’s shaking her head and I guess spitting out a mouth full of sand.

Damn she’s pretty hot from this distance. Tall, thin, and blonde. My kinda woman if you ask me, though she does have curves for days. She’s not one of those who starve themselves to death. She’s even got the type of hips that you can hold when dancing to live music, or even when you’re in the bedroom having a good time rolling in the sheets.

I know I’m so far away from her right now but I can’t tear my eyes off her, and I really can’t help the smile pulling at my lips. She’s fucking gorgeous.

Seeing this blonde chick heading my way with a look of determination, I wonder what’s going through her mind. Do we drink from the same tea or not?

I’ve never had a problem with being who I am and I don’t give a damn what others think but for some reason I hope this chick has something in mind like I do. Or is she maybe trying to see if I can help her find the right street for something. The boardwalk can be confusing to some of the people that come here, and it’s not like the first time a tourist has come up to me for directions.

Her smile dissipates and I watch as her eyes go from my face and come to a screeching halt at my boobs for a second before going down the rest of my body. I could be going crazy, but I’m sure she was just checking me out.

“Hey,” she says in a sinfully decadent accent. Now my nerves are coursing through me. I’m confident as hell with American women, but I’ve never really dominated a foreign one.

“Hey there yourself. Love the accent. Scottish?”

“Born and raised. I’m here on holiday before I start up classes, and you totally didn’t ask for that information. My apologies, I’m Ainslee.” She offers me a hand.

“I’m Finley, but I’m sure you know that by now. Cal can be a bit of a loudmouth.”

“Excuse me. I’m standing right here,” Cal grumbles. He’s locking up the shop, having already taken down the metal door.

“Oh, shut it, Cal. You know I’m only poking fun. Now get going, you’re not a good wingman.” From the corner of my eye I see her smirk a bit, and I realize I’m right. She is interested in me. I’m certain she can read my mind when her eyes land on my growing smile. Hopefully I didn’t just fuck this up.

“Damn, Fin’, you always have better luck with women,” Cal grumbles as he starts walking down the boardwalk. “Catch you tomorrow. Don’t be late, but if you are your ass better have a coffee for me and a good story.”

Rolling my eyes, I turn my attention back to Ainslee. “So, what are you going to school for?” I ask, stepping closer to her.

“Business administration. I’m supposed to be taking over the family business with my brother but it’s all about helping manage the family farm. My dad’s a fisherman and my brother’s raising sheep. It’s rather boring if I’m being frank. I’d honestly prefer to do anything else. Something much more exciting.”

“Sounds boring,” I laugh. “So, you wanna get out of here and do something fun. Maybe get a beer, or go listen to some music? That’s where I was heading.”

“Sure, as long as you’re paying. But no beer. I can’t stand that. But be warned, tequila makes my clothes fall off.”

“Tequila it is. Gotcha,” I joke. I have no problem being flirtatious with a woman like this. She’s adorable with her alabaster skin, and I love the way the redness flushes over her cheeks. She might be reacting this way because of my bluntness. Maybe she’s not used to this with the women back home, but I have no problem continuing to be forward.

I start walking the same way Cal’s going and Ainslee walks alongside me. “So, did you grow up here?”

“Yeah, born and bred. My entire family lives in Virginia. Just down the way, in Pungo.” Well, most of them. I don’t bother thinking of my family that’s out in Franklin.

“Oh, I saw a sign for that.” She fidgets with her hair a bit, showing me she might be a little bit nervous.

“So, um, you’ve been here on holiday? Have you done anything fun?”

“No, nothing fun until tonight. Hopefully . . .”

“Well, that sucks. I’ll just have to show you how we locals live it up around here.” I grin and make a bold move of grabbing her hand. Hopefully she doesn’t pull away, or mind that I’m so forward. Ainslee’s eyes lock in on mine for a minute and she tries to hide her smile. “Are we headed to a place you know well?”

“You could say that. I’m gonna get us in backstage.”

  “That sounds like fun.”

“Yeah. My cousin, Lex, has a friend named Ace. His band is playing tonight down at the center and they’re really good.”

“What kind of music, like rock, pop, metal or?”

“Rock. They’re from here too, so they’re kinda like Good Charlotte is to the Marylanders, their pride and joy.”

“That’s so neat. We don’t have anything like that where I’m from. Going off to university has been the highlight of my life so far. At least I’m able to see people who haven’t known me since I was a wee tot. Imagine if all your neighbors have seen your bum. I ripped off my diaper when I was two at a backyard barbeque. They still tell that story.” Heat flushes to her cheeks. “Oh my God, why in the world did I just tell you that? I’m so sorry!”

I can’t help but bust out laughing. This has to be the funniest thing I’ve ever heard in my life.

“If it makes you feel any better, I have you topped. Try being in a restaurant with your family and pick up the
ketchup to pour some on your fries. Nothing comes out so you put the top back on but forget to tighten it. When I shook the bottle, the cap flew off and ketchup hit some old dude in the crotch. Talk about embarrassing. My grandma and I couldn’t stop laughing, especially when the dude looked down at me and asked, ‘What do I tell my wife?’ I about pissed myself laughing so hard.”

“Goodness. How old were you? You said looked down, so I imagine you were a child.”

  “Yeah, I was like nine.”

“Well, I’m glad you had a story because otherwise I would’ve been mortified at what I said,” she admits, trying aimlessly to keep herself from blushing. Yet, she turns as red as a tomato.

I squeeze her hand and chuckle lightly.“Nah, I’m really laid back. You know? Plus, I have countless others.”
