“Oh, on a little grey mare!”

“That’s right. I vaulted on to Phantom and fled, otherwise I would have been kidnapped and ransomed and the government would have fallen. So you altered the fate of nations,” I finished dramatically.

“What a story. Honestly, Jean, you’re going too far,” Alison said.

“It was serious, very serious,” I answered. “Very secretive, too.”

“To change the subject, what about the chestnut Arab turned out with a donkey. The one at Hill Farm House?” asked Alison, handing me her empty glass.

  “Marli?”

  “Is that what she’s called?”

Putting the glass down I nodded. “And she needs a home,” I said. “A good one for ever and ever.”

“I know someone who wants one for long-distance riding. She is Arab, isn’t she?” asked Alison, pulling up her girth.

“As pure as pure,” I answered, and saw that Phantom was grazing the lawn. Later Dad would grumble about the hoofmarks, but now it did not matter – the only thing which mattered was that he was eating. I followed him as he moved from mouthful to mouthful while Alison called, “Can I collect her tomorrow?”

“I don’t see why not. I’m in charge. We can meet you at Hill Farm House any time. I’m getting ten per cent and it must be a good home, and the price is not less than three thousand pounds,” I called back.

“That’s fine. I’ll meet you about six. Okay?”

“Yes, okay, and we’ll get old Maggie moved, too,” I shouted. “And thank you again.”

I listened to Old Century’s hoofs clip-clopping away before I turned Phantom out. Watching him roll, I knew that the nightmare was finally over. Rachel would go on living it for some time – perhaps for ever – but I would recover.

As I mixed a feed for Phantom, I was filled with a tremendous sense of achievement because, somehow, against all odds, we had survived.
