Baron Roades came from nothing and no one.

First, he found a family and then he found his girl.

Everything would be perfect if she'd only stop fighting him at every turn.

Frannie Smythe was orphaned at a time when she needed her parents most. Forging forward in a lonely world, she didn't know how to handle Baron Roades. Once she lets him in, everything moves quickly.

Baron is the first book in the Mansion On The Hill Series. It's different from what you've come to expect from

ChaShiree & M.K. but it's still got all the love you can handle.

  Prologue

  Baron

  October 2001

Being in a group home is sometimes too much to bear... I’ve been in a group home for as long as I can remember. The caseworker assigned to watch over ‘my care,’ informed me what my circumstances in life are early on. My mother was a teenager addicted to drugs and had no idea who my father could be. Considering her own parents didn’t know she was pregnant; she gave me away without even holding me. I am now ten years old and think it could be worse, so I should count my blessings.

One positive thing in my life is that I'm glad I’ve made a few friends, who are actually more like brothers to me. Unfortunately, at the moment, I’ve made the mistake of leaving the room I share with Princeton, Duke, and Marquise by myself. The other kids call us ‘royalty’, meaning when I make the mistake of being by myself, I usually get my ass kicked.

I’m almost to the kitchen to begin doing my chores when Jack, the resident bully, trips me in the hallway. He starts punching me over and over again all over my body, then suddenly he’s gone. My nose is busted, and a tooth has been knocked loose, but all in all I am okay. Getting up from the floor, I see Jack getting the beat down of his life by my brothers.

“You okay, Baron?” Marquise asks me.

“Yeah, I’m good,” I tell him.

Leaving Jack in a heap on the floor, they escort me the rest of the way to the kitchen. Mrs. Magneson, the group home director, is already in the kitchen and she doesn’t look happy to see me. Standing beside her is a man, with a woman at his side, who is talking to her.

“Boys... This is the mayor of Winnetka, Mr. Roades and his wife, Mrs. Roades. They are touring the house.”

“Why would you want to tour this depressing place?” Princeton asks earning a death glare from Mrs. Magneson, but the mayor only laughs.

“My wife is interested in doing a few fundraisers to raise money for the home and she wanted to see it. This means, a gentleman always goes where his lady does,” he says imparting some knowledge on us.

“We wouldn’t know much about being gentlemen,” Princeton counters.

“There’s still time to learn,” he says.

“And who’s gonna teach us? You?” He shoots back at him.

  “If you’d like.”

“How’d that work?” Marquise pipes in.

“What happened to you, sweetie?” The woman suddenly in front of me asks. Her soft hand rests on my cheek.

  “Nuthin,” I lie.

“Do you know that you are bleeding?” she asks me. Her perfume smells very nice, but with the way she’s being nice to me assuredly means there is something wrong with her...

  “Yes,” I tell her.

“How about we get you cleaned up?” She asks, leading me over to the sink.

“You don’t have to do that, ma’am,” Mrs. Magneson tells her.

“I know that I don’t have to, but the question is why aren’t you?” She asks while wetting a paper towel, then gently wipes my face.

“You’ll need to see a dentist,” she murmurs.

“What’s that?” I ask the word sounding foreign to me.

  “What?” She asks, shocked.

  “I don’t know what that is, ma’am.”

“Call me Susan. What’s your name?”

  “Baron,” I reply.

“What a lovely name. Why don’t you and your friends go outside and play, while I have a chat with Mrs. Magneson.” She instructs as she finishes cleaning my face.

“These are my brother’s and we aren’t allowed outside,” I whisper. She smiles softly at me.

“Kieran? Can I have a word in private please?”

“Yes, my dear. Excuse me, boys,” the man, apparently called Kieran, says to my brothers.

The couple moves off to the side and Mrs. Magneson moves over to me. She discreetly grabs my elbow and lowers herself close to my face.

“What did you say to her, boy?” She says through gritted teeth.

“I didn’t say nuthin’, honest.” I lie and pray that it doesn’t come back on me.

“You better not have. We need their money,” she says, before straightening up and plastering the fakest smile I’ve ever seen on her face.

The couple returns and the man hands Princeton a card. It’s as if he knows that he’s the leader of our group.

“We have to go now, but if you need anything, I want you to call that number.” Princeton nods.

I’ve never used the phone before. Who would I call? The others had normal lives once.

Susan comes back to me and ruffles my hair, then pulls me into a hug. “I’ll be back, Baron,” she whispers as she hugs me a little tighter. I wrap my little arms around her waist as best I can and soak in my first hug. Too soon she’s gone, and I am afraid I will never see her again. It turns out not to be the case.

The very next day things start to happen at the youth home. At dawn, the state
marches in and takes over the day to day operations of the home. Mrs. Magneson is out on her ass.

A few days later, the Roades came back with lawyers and all four of our social workers.

“We want to adopt you,” Susan says to everyone in the room.

“All of us?” I instantly blurt out.

“Yes, of course. We would never break up a family. Baron said you were brothers and now you can be our sons.” Needless to say, we all agreed.

Stepping outside I feel cold, but it’s not freezing. Susan thought ahead and brought coats for each of us, which is a first for me. I only had enough to get by with and decided to leave it all behind.

Driving from the inner city to the suburbs, I am amazed by the sheer size of the houses. In Winnetka, driving into a subdivision there is nothing but mansions. Turning and going up a hill, we pull up in front of a house, my mouth drops open. It’s one of the biggest houses I have ever seen.

“This is where you live?” Marquise asks, breaking the silence that lasted the entire drive.

  “We do,” Kieran says.

“And we hope you’ll come to think of it as your home too,” Susan says, turning in the passenger seat to look in the backseat.

Later that night, Susan comes in and turns off the lights in my very own bedroom.

“Susan!” I shout before she can close the door.

“Yes, sweetie?” She asks, pausing at the door.

“Thank you for coming back,” I whisper.

She comes back to my bed and wraps me in her motherly arms. I soak every ounce of comfort from her. It is the first time I have felt safe and loved. I am overly warm, fed, and so are my brothers. It will take some getting used to, but I’ve never been happier.

I vow here and now, to never disappoint Kieran and Susan.

  Chapter One

  Baron

  March 2020

Being the Chief Communications Officer of Roades Information Systems, I get to design the strategy of how we communicate as an organization. It means, I also get to deal with media relations. My team and I work daily with all the local news outlets, as well as social media entities.

Roades Information Systems is a multibillion-dollar, multinational software creation company that has skyrocketed in the last five years. The four of us have put our sweat and blood into the company. It’s actually Princeton’s baby, but he brought all of us in at the very beginning and we built the company from the ground up together.

Our first investor was Kieran, also known these days as Dad. He and Mom sent each of us to the college of our choosing. And the rest is history. They’re not at home very much anymore, since they have to be in DC due to dad being a Senator for the State of Illinois.

I am currently in a not high end, but not low-end restaurant named, The Lady’s Den, in downtown Chicago with the President of a National Network. Ordinarily I take them to expensive, hundred-dollar steak establishments. However, the moment I met Morty, I knew he wouldn’t require such class. We would like to get a commercial spot during next year’s big football game, which means I am winning and dining the guy.

Personally, I think all he wants to do is use the trip as an excuse to cheat on his wife. He has asked me to set up an outing to a strip club, but I firmly shut that shit down. I don’t condone cheating, nor do I frequent strip clubs. We’ve barely sat down at the table when he starts that fucking shit again.

“I really would like to go to a strip club after dinner,” he says looking over the menu.

“You are welcome to do so, Morty. Unfortunately, I will not be joining you.” I told him for the fourth time since I picked him up at the airport.

“You don’t have to be such a fuddy-duddy, Baron. Really, it’s just a strip club,” he says. Thankfully I don’t have a chance to respond, because at that precise moment the most beautiful woman in the world comes to our table with her order pad and pen at the ready. I am momentarily stunned. Her deep red hair captures my attention first, even though the rest of her is just as stunning.

“Good evening. My name is Frannie and I’ll be your server for the evening. Can I get you started with drinks from the bar? Or perhaps an iced tea or soda?” She asks. Her French-tinged accent is sexy as fuck. I have to adjust my cock under the table.

“I’ll have a scotch and water,” Morty tells her.

“I’ll take a Cosmo,” my assistant, Laurie, says. She is here to take notes and knows my feelings about drinking on the clock but ignores my preferences as always. I wish I could fire her, but for some fucking reason that’s not a part of my job.

“Perfect. And for you, sir?” She asks me. I look up at her and she gasps.

“I’ll have one of those iced teas you mentioned,” I tell her.

“No problem, sir. Coming right up.” She rushes away and returns a few minutes later with our drinks in hand.

  “Are you ready to order?”

“Yes. I will have the twenty-two-ounce porterhouse, the whole lobster, and a loaded baked potato,” Morty says.

God, could he be any crasser? Not only is he an awful human being, but he also orders the most expensive things on the menu. He is taking complete advantage knowing that I’ll foot the bill. I want to tell him to go fuck himself, but we need the coveted commercial spot after the half-time show.

“And how would you like that cooked?” Frannie asks. I can’t stop staring at her red wavy hair and mesmerizing hazel eyes.

  “Medium rare.”

  “Ma’am?”

“I’ll have a garden salad, but I’d like the dressing on the side,” Laurie coos in her overly annoying voice.

“Yes, of course. And for you, sir?” She asks, turning to me again.

  “I’ll have the lobster linguine.”

“Excellent choice, sir. I had it before my shift started.” I smile at her.

“Thank you, Frannie.” She blushes when I say her name.

“I’ll get this order right in.”

“Put a rush on it. I’ve got somewhere to be,” Morty says with his New York accent out of place here.

“No problem, sir.” She looks back at me one more time before going to the waitress station to enter the order.

Once she is done with that, my eyes follow her down the hallway. I give her a few minutes and then excuse myself to go and try to talk to her privately. Rounding the corner, I find her leaning against the wall. When I reach her, she doesn’t move away from me.

“Did you need something, sir?” She breathes when I am standing directly in front of her.

“Your phone number and last name, Frannie.”

“I don’t date customers. But my last name is Smythe” she says shyly.

“That’s a good policy, but who said anything about dating?” I ask her. She giggles and rolls her eyes and still doesn’t move away from me.

“That’s very forward, sir,” she says in a serious tone.

“You ain’t seen nothing yet, Frannie,” I say.

I boldly lower my lips to hers and she moans, before kissing me back. As I run my fingertips up the outside curve of her thigh, she pushes me away and takes off down the hall. I do not get to see her again through the rest of dinner. But, as soon as I ditch Morty and Laurie, I begin my search for Frannie Smythe. The need to find her is the only thing on my mind.

At damn near one in the morning I rouse my IT guy, Ray, out of bed to have him come to my office. He arrives quickly, still in his pajamas and a mega laptop in hand. Normally I would care that I've done something so inconsiderate, but I'm panicking and pacing my office floor like a caged lion. Why would she take off like that?

"Okay, boss. I'm all set up. Name?"

"Frannie Smythe," I tell him. He types in her name and looks at me expectantly.

"Age? Anything you can tell me about her?"

"Yes. I need to know her age. The only thing I know is that she has a French accent and works at The Lady’s Den downtown."

"Gimme a few minutes." He says, tapping away at the keys. I
return to pacing.

"Got it!" He says, as my printer starts shooting out the information I need. I grab the paper before Ray can reach for it. Although it's late, I know exactly where I'm fucking going now.

"Thanks, Ray," I toss over my shoulder as I bolt out the door. My driver is on standby, so I get in the back of my town car without waiting for him to get out to open the door. I give him the address and settle in to read all about my girl.

  Name: Francesca Genevieve Smythe

  Age: 18

  DOB: 6/9/2001

Place of Birth: Sainte-Catherine-de-la-Jacques-Cartier, Québec, QC, Canada

Address: 16 King Drive Apt 3601 Chicago, IL

  Social Media: None located

Previously enrolled at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Student visa is on the verge of lapsing due to not being registered for classes this semester.

Hmm, Quebec explains the sexy accent.

When I get to the address, an old couple lives there and they have never heard of her. Son of a bitch! I need to decide on a plan to get her to be mine. I know that I can’t go off half-cocked. How does someone I barely met make such an impact on me? It’s challenging to comprehend, but it is what it is.

Frannie Smythe will be mine come hell or high water.

  Chapter Two

  Frannie

“What the hell girl?” I question myself as I walk down the block towards the apartment.

I normally take an Uber because my friend Esther doesn’t like me walking so late in the evening. Tonight, I need to clear my head and focus my mind. The kiss that man gave me has my head messed up and confused, but not because I didn’t like it. I saw when he came in an hour earlier with that pompous guy. If you can believe it or not, my initial reaction was to squeeze my pussy and let it yell, “I’m over here.” He is fucking hot. While standing at the hostess counter, I could tell he was about 5 ’11”. His muscles are clearly visible through his suit and his face is no joke. Can you say Tom Hardy?
