Chapter One
Lieutenant Commander Kellah Franklin didn't realize it would be so busy in the research computer lab area. Several people walked in and out as she did, causing her to be jostled into one of them. Large hands steadied her as her body and another were pushed to one side.
She felt a solid body pressed against hers momentarily. She looked up to apologize, and looked into a set of gold-flecked amethyst eyes. Her body became instantly aware of the man's alien charisma.
What an incredible sea hulk! She appreciated his smile that seemed to sparkle even more when she noted he felt the same quick attraction. His exotic golden-green skin added to his handsome physique.
"It does seem busy today here?” Amusement was evident in the fluid smooth voice. His sexy voice vibrated appealingly against her breasts. She noticed he looked for the telltale blue dot that showed whether a person wore an intergalactic language translator implant in his or her lobe.
She tried not to blush, knowing this powerful enigma was more than aware of her rapidly beating heart. She saw little strands of what looked like kelp, maybe even seaweed, layering his dark gold hair, as if they were just mere wisps of hair blowing about his face. His exotic looks tempted her. Kellah forced herself to act more rationally.
"It does seem so,” she replied, pulling herself back from him. “Thank you for not trampling me. It seems to have eased up now."
He glanced around the large room and then back to her. “Yes it does. “I see a few open terminals. Perhaps I'll see you later."
"Perhaps,” she moved to a computer console at a different end of the room than what he'd gone towards. She certainly hoped they did meet up again. As she made to turn on the research com-unit, she briefly thought about the alien.
Because of the slick, shiny looking wetsuit he wore for clothing, she knew him to be a Seamarrin. Most of them wore the wetsuits to regulate their body temperatures when out of water or in conditions adverse to their native water environments. They lived under the oceans of their world more than on top; the race was more water breathers than air breathers. They also used air-tablets or nose loops across the bridge of their noses for breathing out of the water if they could not take the air tablets.
They were an interesting race and were here aboard the ship she served on, for various purposes. The Galactic Goldfysh floated amongst the stars as one of the largest scientific and exploration ships in t
he cosmos. It was definitely one of the more modern Earthstar vessels around. She'd served aboard it now as the second-science officer for about two months. Her recent promotion gave her more of a chance to study newer places in the universe and to meet with other species from different worlds. Much like the sea-living entity she'd just stumbled against a few minutes ago.
The Seamarrin and Earth scientists began working on a space-environmental project not long after she came aboard. As the Seamarrins recently started cultivating space technology and had been in contact with Earth for barely a year now, the aliens wanted to see how long their people could work and live normally in space vessels. Especially when it came time for their mating phases.
She came to the research lab to learn more about the Seamarrins as she would be working closely with some of their top scientists on the conditions of the heated mating pools, which were constructed aboard the Goldfysh a few months back.
The Seamarrin project didn't really get underway until a month ago when the mating pools had been totally constructed. She'd only been working with a few of the scientists a couple of weeks and knew other Seamarrin personnel would be joining the crew of the Goldfysh soon.
Kellah typed in requested data on the research console, becoming quickly engrossed in the subject of the Seamarrin male's mating habits. They were similar in their mating habits to that of an Earth sea dragon; yet since they were half-humanoid, there would be slight differences, she believed, not really knowing firsthand about their practices.
"The console flitzed out I was at. May I use the one next to you."
Kellah's head jerked upwards and she was only slightly surprised to find the Seamarrin she had met earlier standing near the vacated console and chair near hers.
Upon seeing his full lips curve into a wide grin, she smiled automatically. “Yes, no problem."
"Thank you. This is only my second day on the Goldfysh, but I need to learn more of your Earth customs so that I do not offend anyone I'm to work with."
She didn't want the Seamarrin to think she was rude or uncooperative. She held her hand out. “Oh, you haven't offended anyone, I'm sure. One of our customs is a handshake when greeting another person. I am Lieutenant Commander Kellah Franklin, the Goldfysh's second-in-charge science officer. I was told a Doctor Greyce Wataire would be coming aboard soon to head one segment of the research projects. Might you be him then?"
His grin had a calming effect on her as he took her proffered hand. “I am. Then I hope it's not considered offensive to say you are as lovely as any sea nymph. I've only done slight research on your world's seas and folklore, but would like to find out more. We have some sea nymphs that dwell in the waters of Seamarrin, but they don't associate much with us."
"Thank you, I am not offended.” She motioned for him to sit at the mini-console next to her own, moving back into her chair as he sat. “We have legends about mermaids and sea beings. I'm sure I can help you find them. We have intelligent sea creatures that still inhabit our waters, like dolphins and whales. Mermaids were not that sociable. Not sure about sea nymphs, though. I must confess I came here to learn more about your world, too."
"Then perhaps we could help each other with the basic fundamentals. I was told you were to head the Earth side of the project. You will need to know more about our mating habits. I am glad we finally got to meet, as I am now in charge of the mating pool environ experiments."
She gulped. “You mean I have to learn how your people have sex?"
He actually blushed slightly. “Yes, I think it appropriate if we are to work together. Perhaps we can start now. I am curious as to how you Earthers take care of your young and procreate."
She gulped again. “Uhm, why don't we start with the way Seamarins procreate? I was briefly told and then started to read earlier that most Seamarrins mate in a similar vein to that of Earth's sea dragon. Is this true?"
He looked at her quizzically. “I do not know if I am familiar with that sea-being of your world. Please explain."
She reached in front of him and flipped on his console then programmed in a command. “Here, look this over, and then we can discuss things easier."
"I shall read this then, but will it not be easier to exchange data if you are more informed about us also?"
She nodded, and when he reached over to pull up information on her computer, she took a deep scent of his invigorating male aroma. She used to love walking on the beach as a child, smelling the saltiness of the sea in the crisp spring air.
"You smell of the sweet air of our purple seas.” His smile and eyes were almost hypnotizing. “Uh, here, you read about Seamarrin practices while I read about Earth's. My clan is known as Watren, but we are much like most Seamarin males in our sexual aspects."
"All humans procreate nearly the same way, but our sexual preferences vary."
"I suppose it would be personal then to ask yours?"
"Yes,” she answered and turned her seat away from his. “Very."
She felt relieved when he turned to read his computer screen.

Chapter Two
Greyce Wataire couldn't believe his odd behavior. Earth people were their allies and friends, but he acted like he was in mating heat the way he immediately took to Commander Franklin. He'd never thought about being so forward with any alien female before. Not that he'd met many since his world started space explorations. If he were truthful, he believed that it was because she was different from the females of his world.
That's one of the reasons, too, that there were only a few female Seamarrins on the Earth science vessel. And those were junior scientists, some near their reproduction cycle, who had volunteered for the environ experiments. What he knew secretly though, was why there were fewer women than men of his world on this vessel; the men of his world were tired of the cold emotions they received from their females. The Seamarrin males knew it was only a matter of time and environment, that new females born away from Seamarrin might have a chance to become adaptable to Earth women's emotional perspective to their young.
It was why the geneticists of his world inveigled the Earth scientists to do the experiments with them. What with the resources they could offer Earth, Greyce knew that their scientists and space team would be more than happy to help the Seamarrins with their breeding experiments.
Nearly a year ago, his science team had seen an Earth woman almost die to help her young child, but it was something that a Seamarrin female would not be capable of. The Seamarrin scientists decided that perhaps it was their own natural environment that made the females not want to raise their children. The men had always done so as far back as Greyce could recall. But emancipated males were tired of the women taking control of everything, and of them not giving back what nature said they should. Which was why the experiments started and ended up here on the Goldfysh.
Perhaps if the new hatchlings of female Seamarrins could learn from a new environment, then they might take that empathic learning to others on their world. He could only hope that children born in the Earth-touched surroundings would indeed make a change in the Seamarrin females’ emotional behaviors towards their mates and siblings. Only with time aboard the Goldfysh and successful, controlled mating behavior patterns might it all work.
"Oh my,” the soft exclamation startled him out of his reverie. He glanced to see what Lieutenant Commander Franklin read. “So this is actually how it's done with your people?"
"Yes, and there will be a mating observation tomorrow night if you would care to join us."
"As a science officer, yes, I believe it would be interesting to see. Still, for some humans, such an act is very private."
"Can you be objective as you observe the coupling?"
He looked deep into her gray-green eyes as she turned to look upon him. He sensed a warring within her, but her emotional vibrations, like those of most humans, were still hard for him to completely interpret. He couldn't quite understand what it was about t
his female in particular that made his stomach do unusual somersaulting vibrations. Perhaps in a few days, when they were more relaxed around each other and working more closely together, she might be able to help him understand why he felt this way around her. He picked up on her emotions more than he realized.
"I think I could be.” She tossed her mid-length russet waves off her shoulder in a nervous movement as she stood up suddenly. “You must excuse me. I have some duties to attend to now. Aboard the ship, there really is no night or day, just sleep, work and play hours. We shall meet later then, Doctor Wataire."
He stood up with her, noting with satisfaction that they were of similar height. She would fit nicely against him. That made him smile. “We are not as formal on Seamarrin. Please call me Greyce. I look forward to seeing you later. I shall be here for a few more minutes."
She nodded his way, and he watched her curvy body until she left the library. There was something about human female forms that were quite pleasing to watch. His research team had been telling him this since he came aboard the ship. And he couldn't agree with them more. He wondered what it would be like to mate with a human female. One in particular.
As he turned back to read his computer screen, a sudden warm, tingling sensation overcame him. He felt the flushness in his face, and then it slowly worked its way down to his midsection. Greyce groaned loudly, glad no one else was in the room. The sensations became warmer, heating him to his deepest sexual core.
"Not now! It's not supposed to be my breeding cycle yet. It has to wait for a while. Not now."
He had to keep control of his emotions. Most men could count their cycles every other month as regular things. They could bypass their mating frenzy in the colder seas away from the women, if necessary, by choosing to sleep through it for a few hours; going into a coma-like hibernation until the spasms of savage desire coursed through their body.
He felt it only mildly. He could not allow a frenzy to overtake him now. He'd told his team that he was nowhere near his mating cycle. And he shouldn't have been. Then what brought this oddly timed occurrence on? He had only one available answer. Kellah Franklin.
