Yet no matter what occurred outside the borders of Tyrswick, Frey felt only peace.
Now summer arrived. More than a year had passed since that fateful day on the judicial list at Durham Castle.
Sebastian kept his promise and showed her the secluded glen with the waterfall, and indeed it felt good to swim without clothes. They dried off in the sunlight and made love in the shade of a spreading oak tree.
She traced the scar on his chest with her fingers, marveling how something red hot and angry could fade to pink and would soon be white, lingering like a ghost of events past—always there but with no more power to harm.
Frey kissed the scar and across his chest, taking in the warmth of his skin and the firmness of the muscles that lay beneath. She touched every inch of his flesh, giving thanks for its wholeness before she joined him in mutual communion.
Their bodies might be only temporarily united, but their souls were one forever, indivisible.
And now, with their bodies momentarily sated, Frey whispered her news that, God willing, there would be an heir to Tyrswick to arrive on their second wedding anniversary.
Never had surrender been so sweet.
